InactiveHello..I am new to the forum, but unfortunately not to gerd..a little history is this:I have 9 month old twins boys, born full term, and Peyton is my gerdling who only dream feeds..elijah (his brother) is normal..Peyton was diagnosed with gerd at 2 weeks old after refusing to eat and then at 5 months he was diagnosed with laryngomalacia and sandifers syndrome as well as a sensory feeding disorder(he only drinks while asleep)..I have managed to keep him off of a tube by arranging my whole life around getting him to sleep so I can feed him..his speech language pathologist told me he will dream feed until he’s on a cup and spoon and his gi dr agrees.well today he has refused to even dream feed and I’ve used a medicine dropper all day and I’m at my wits end..he’s had these days before but not to this extreme..I THINK he is teething but I don’t know..please help me ..how do I get him to drink?

InactiveNot sure if this will help but when Chloe got a sore throat we gave her baby tylenol (recommended by our pediatrician) and it helped her stay relaxed while feeding.

InactiveThat sounds exactly like our story- literally. My dd also had laryngomalacia with stridor. She coughed and gagged alot and hated eating. She never cried to be fed, but cried when I tried to feed her. She’d arch, and scream and pull away, and show Sandifer’s symptoms. She developed a feeding aversion from uncontrolled reflux, we had to sleep feed, and our whole existence was to avoid a feeding tube. We managed to keep her weight up by sleep feeding, otherwise she wouldn’t eat. I’d lock myself in her room every day for hours, close the blackout drapes, rock her to a calm state, and try to feed her. It took hours to get her to take 1-3 ounces, and giving meds was also a nightmare. She alo wouldn’t even take solids when we tried to start at 6 months. We started feeding therapy at 8 months, and continued until 15 months. At 8 months we started with a cup, and went right to letting her feed herself, because she wouldn’t let anyone feed her. Our feeding therapist was very good, but it was a long road. My advice would be to make sure that the reflux is well controlled before starting solids or cup feeding or the aversion may just move into all realms of feeding like ours did. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com to read about PPIs and meds and dosing. I believe that babies with feeding aversions need to be dosed higher to make sure that the pain is under control. Once that happens, then hopefully you can start feeding therapy, or move on to cup and spoon feeding. How much medication is he on, and what type and form. We were using a compound for a long time and that was part of the problem as well. Good luck.

Inactivehi Lori, thank you so much for replying..he is currently on 15 mg prevacid solutab, one half tab twice per day and he does take solids with no troubles…it’s taking his bottle that is the nightmare.he sees an Slp for feeding therapy and a ped gi dr and an ent.he is on goodstart soy formula, the gi dr tried to switch him to neocate once unsuccessfully, however he is confident that allergies are not the issue..
He generally takes @ 30 to 36 oz of formula per day by dream feeding but lately even 20 is a struggle.i am scared of the tube..he has only lost weight twice since birth, the first time was 2 oz and the second was 9 oz so they took that a bit more serious..he has started coughing and choking on his bottle and his breathing has gotten worse..
