InactiveMy 1 yr old has been on prilosec since he was 5 months old. We’ve been having it made at a lab. Our Ped GI suggested we give him the 10mg tablet with orange juice. The thing is that she told me that the contents of the pill would dissolve and that’s yet to happen! She told me to put the 10mg tablet contents into 10 ml of OJ and then give him 9 ml of the resuspended meds. Well, they don’t dissolve and everything I’ve seen thus far say they don’t. And from what I’ve heard, it takes hours in the lab to make the liquid form. So what gives? How do I give it to him. I have him the 9ml with the little balls from the capsul last night and about killed him, poor little man! So this morning I did a little spoon of OJ with the contents of the capsul. How do I do this right??? I’ve had so many issues with the lab, I’d really rather learn how to do it this way. Please help!
Thanks!

Keymasterok first of all, use capsules:
open up the capsule and take out the ‘beads’-
divide the beads into two piles (doses)it is necessary to give the medicine on an empty stomach
put the beads on a teaspoon of applesauce and give it that way
then you follow up w/ a meal 30 minutes laterJanuary 15, 2010 at 4:53 am #65492Anonymous
InactiveI’m living in Brazil and haven’t found applesauce. Can I make homemade applesauce and put it in that? Is there anything else I could use like yogurt?

Keymasteryou could make home made applesauce. it’s the acidity from the apples and I believe orange juice might be too much acidity? I certainly don’t know…
you could contact marci-kids/dr philips and ask…but in the meantime, steam some apples and blend them to be very fine…

InactiveI have to say that sounds impossible to do. Ask your doctor for the prevacid solutab. Not sure what it’s called in brazil, but the med is lansoprazole, and there’s a versoin that dissolves. It tastes better and is much easier to give. Also, dissolved prilosec will taste so terrible, I’ve tasted it, you could throw up it’s so bitter. How many times a day is he taking it… If just once, then his dose sounds really low. You can use apple juice to dissolve, works the same. But I’d honestly try to get the prevacid solutabs, will be much easier and taste much better. Even I needed a chaser after trying the prilosec that way. Good luck.

InactiveI did ask about lansoprazole but it’s not approved for children in brazil. I’m going to make some applesauce and try that tonight. The orange juice really isn’t working for him. I gave it to him with a little yogurt this morning. I’ll do the apple sauce tonight. Poor little guy. I hate this experimenting!

InactivePrilosec isn’t approved for children either, I don’t think. Neither is prevacid. At least in Canada.

Keymasteryogurt won’t work. it needs to have acidity…

InactiveI emailed dr. Phillips (thank you!) and he told me a tsp of applesauce. I made some up tonight and used that. Fingers crossed!

InactiveHomemade applesauce is just boiled and blended apples with some sugar, right?
January 17, 2010 at 1:40 pm #65546hellbennt
Keymasteryou don’t have to add sugar…
what I do is peel apples, cut into chunks, put in pan w/ a little water (you can always add more wateras you go along),
cook/simmer until apple chunks are very soft
then I take it out and blend it to a smooth consistancyJanuary 17, 2010 at 2:33 pm #65547Anonymous
Inactiveyou don’t even need to add sugar. Use a sweet apple. Good luck.

InactiveCan you give prevacid with apple juice in a syringe instead of applesauce? Never thought of that! Just wondering…
January 19, 2010 at 5:42 pm #65577Anonymous
InactiveYou can, but it’s not easy. You’d need to use a bulb syringe, as the beads won’t go through. Also, they won’t dissolve like the solutab, so you’ll have all the beads at the front and the liquid at the back. If you’re going to go that route, why not use the solutabs?
