InactiveOK, we switched to a new Dr. because our old one was a Family Practice Dr. and was not willing to rx a PPI. The new pediatrician we saw prescribed liquid suspension Prilosec (she said she has seemed to have better luck w/ Prilosec than Prevacid).
This is the dose – 3ML every day (2mg/ml) (she said to give to him in the morning since our days seem to be the worst and if needed we can tweek his dose and give it to him 2x/day).After looking at Marci kids dosing for Prilosec it shows <3 months 1.5 mg 3x/day which would be a total of 4.5 mg a day…the way our pediatrician prescribed it he’d be taking a total of 6 mg a day.I’m new to all this so maybe I’m calculating this wrong…anyone have thoughts/opinions on the dosing she prescribed? Also, if I’ve read correctly, everyone has said to keep up w/ the Zantac for 2 weeks. Our Dr said to stop the Zantac.THANKS for any input!February 7, 2010 at 3:13 pm #65767Anonymous
InactiveI believe it’s 1.5mg per kg, 3 x a day, which ends up being much higher than 6mg. How much does he weigh?
Also, I personally hated the suspension. Check out the link treating GERD with PPIs stickied under the medications forum. It will tell you how the PPI needs to be made. Very few pharmacies, even compounding pharmacies make them correctly. If it has flavouring, already it isn’t being made very well, as that could degrade the med. Anyhow, I’d give it a shot and see how it goes. If there’s no improvement after a while, then I’d say it’s likely either due to the dose being low, or the compound not being made correctly. Hopefully it will help though. Most people keep up with the zantac as it coudl take 2 weeks for the PPI to take full effect. Our doc also told us to stop though. Good luck.February 12, 2010 at 6:36 pm #65791Anonymous
InactiveOh gosh, I feel stupid….
He weighs 13 lbs… so I know I divide his weight by 2.2 which is 5.9 kg is this correct?? I don’t understand how to figure the rest out. I’m trying to see if the dose she prescribed is low according to Marci.THANKSFebruary 12, 2010 at 10:54 pm #65792Anonymous
InactiveMarci-Kids has a dosing calculator… (linked from the dosing chart page)… the problem is, they only have Prevacid & Zegerid.
13lbs is 5.9 kg
1.5 mg/kg would be: 8.85mg 3x/day (for a total of 26.55mg/day).
I would try to get another form of PPI (Prevacid 15mg solutabs or Zegerid 40mg packets) if you can… I know, easier said than done… so that you don’t have to deal w/ the compounding issue & it being made incorrectly, not being stable/effective, etc.
Yes, continue Zantac for 2 wks after starting a PPI but make sure you space it 4hrs apart from each other.
Hang in there!

Keymasterthere’s also Bufferbabies 🙂
this can be used w/ prilosec or prevacid (I would say go for the prevacid!)Prevacid 101, last post on the page (also has info about prilosec and zantac, too)

InactiveIt’s so frustrating! I called my pharmacy asking exactly how his prilosec was compounded. The pharmacist was on the defense from the beginning…informing me she compounded it correctly and there was no “flavoring” and it would be stable for 1 month…then turned around and said she’d put some kind of sweetner it it, yet she doesn’t seem to think that would be considered flavoring!! UGHHH! She just didn’t get it.
I had read on here about problems w/ the suspensions but was hoping it would not be an issue for us. I don’t understand why all the dr’s and pharmacists are clueless about this.We saw an improvement in just 2 days changing his formula to Nutramigen, and he had 1 fairly decent week…but the last week he’s just been slipping backwards….I hate watching this happen to him. Will be calling the Dr Monday to see if we can try something else besides the prilosec suspension. You guys on here are all so great and knowledgeable…it’s overwhelming for a new person…thanks for sharing your tips and advice!aimr2010-02-13 16:40:42

InactiveIt is so frustrating! Our pharmacy used to add stevia and something else, can’t remember what. They said it was fine. When I asked Marci-kids about it, they said it would affect the med. But the bigger issue was that for us, it wasn’t being compounded with enough buffer, and more over, the dose wasn’t big enough to allow her to get enough buffer per dose. Yours is the same, the dose has to be at least 3.5ml per dose to have enough buffer. Even once when we were on 20mg per day, they had compounded it as 20mg/ml, so that I only had to give half a ml per dose twice daily. They told me this was fine, and when I came on here, realized that this was ridiculous! When I went back to the pharmacy to ask, they were so defensive, took me into a backroom and told me that if their compound didn’t work it was because there was something seriously wrong with Hailey and maybe she needed a feeding tube! I went home and cried. Then moved on, despite this being the most upscale reputable compounding pharmacy in the whole city (which later went under for making bad compounds of viagara, incidentally)!
Anyhow, I remember the frustration. I was also frustrating with the doc, because he prescribed it, and was reluctant to believe that I could know more about these meds. It was such a hard time. But see if your doc will agree to some other type of med, and a higher dose if at all possible.Good luck. -
