InactiveWe are planning on starting Zegerid tonight (I’m going to pick it up from the pharm in a bit) but I’m a little confused on a couple things. We are doing 40mg packets & our ped prescribed 20mg/day.
So, looking on the website (on the ‘how-to’ prep a 40mg packet) it says a few things…
1) Do I need the 20mL syringe to prep it?! or could I mix in a small plastic container to mix, shake & store (or any other suggestions)?!
2) I see you only mix the 40mg w/ 6.5 mL of water? How does this make a 4mg/mL solution?! (that makes a 6.1mg/mL solution with my calculations)
3) When mixing w/ the Mylanta do I mix it WITH the solution? or give separately… ie: if I’m giving 2mL of Zegerid solution, do I mix that w/ the 2mL of Mylanta & give the 4mL together?! or do I shoot the 2mL of each down his throat separately.
Thanks anyone that can help! I’ve emailed David Stock already so we’ll see if he gets back to me as well!

Inactivenot sure as we didn’t use this, but for #2, not sure, but could the volume of the water plus the volume of the powder equal a larger volume in the end? I wouldn’t think it would add 3.5ML of volume but not sure how dense the packet is?
Hang in there and SO SORRY you are going through this again! Hang in there!!Ann MarieFebruary 8, 2010 at 5:11 pm #65778Anonymous
InactiveSorry, I have no idea! Sounds complicated. Good luck.

InactiveYes, Ann Marie- that’s how it worked out when I mixed it together – couldn’t believe it was 3.5mL though!!! I’m not thrilled to be going through this again either (obviously) – especially since we’re STILL on the ‘rollercoaster’ with Evan – BUT happy that I know what I know & feel better prepared!
Here’s some info that Amy gave to me:
“This is how Dr. Phillips is saying to mix the zegerid 40mg packets: Zegerid 40mg packets, add 6.5mL tap water to 1 packet. This will make 10mL (40mg in 10mL), Do this in an oral dosing syringe (20mL size syringe preferred).
The add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme to the syringe. Now you will have 20mL total volume and 40mg omeprazole. (2mg omeprazole per each mL)
This is stable in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Shake before each dose. You can put the dose in the bottle of milk. Depends on age and weight. Must use at least 3.5mL per dose, three doses per day or don’t waste your time. Alternatively, use a Tums QuikPack in place of the Mylanta Cherry Supreme – then add enough water to make 20mL total volume.
I’m glad you figured out it was the solutabs! I hope this works well for him!! (I’ve heard you can get the Tums Quik Pacs at the Dollar Tree and according to Dr. Phillips they are MSPI friendly)”
Definitely clarified it for me!! Thanks Amy!erinntx2010-02-08 22:02:12

Oh man Erin I’m sorry you’re thinking it might not work with zegerid/tums!! A
few moms on the other reflux boarrd are starting to use this hyp oallergenic
calcium carbonate to mix with zegerid. Here’s a link to it. I don’t know how
you mix it…but you can ask Dr. Phillips. I tried to find an old thread
talking about it and I wasn’t able to. Hang in there you’re doing GREAT!!!hellbennt2010-02-24 18:21:28

Keymastercopied & pasted from erintx:
Also keep in mind that some babies can have
very loose stools & tummy bloating from the Mylanta so if that
happens you may need to move onto Tums Quik Paks (Tracy & I both
had to for our babies).Hope that helps!

InactiveWe tried the Zegerid w/ Tums and Harry was super gassy, then we tried Zegerid with Mylanta and it was super loose stools… I used a bottle to mix it all up (1 with ml markings on it), and then dispensed it as needed.
Sorry you’re going through this again, but hope it works for you! -
