InactiveOur 11-week-old just had skin testing for milk, soy, and rice allergies and was negative. In the hospital at birth, stool samples had moicroscopic blood and the doctors told us, after trying various formulas, that she was allergic to milk and soy protein. We decided to follow-up this week with the skin testing and were surprised by the negative results. The allergist said she’d never heard of allergies being diagnosed because of blood in the stool, but from what I read, that’s common. What do you all think? Could my baby be MPSI?
We did the testing in hopes she could try regular formula instead of Pregestimil, and the allergist and her ped gastro. said to try a regular formula. After less than 24 hrs. and gradually introducing Good Start, Sandifer symptoms have begun. After 4 such episodes of intense pain, I’ve put her back only on Pregstimil thickened with rice. I just don’t know what to do next. She thrashes about in her sleep, as if fighting something, so I stay exhausted checking on her making sure she’s not choking or having a Sandifer episode. Any suggestions?By the way, we’re approaching 2 weeks on the MARCI recommended dose of Prevacid solutab.February 18, 2010 at 2:10 pm #65824Anonymous
Inactiveskin allergy testing is not reliable until approx 2 years old and even then there are a lot of false positives…..also could be intolerance that will not show up on skin testing. The results don’t mean anything. I would not go back to regular formula expecially if the pregestimil is working……

InactiveI just posted on your other post re: allergy testing… but I Definitely agree w/ Ann Marie – don’t change the formula for now. I said this on the other post but if you’ve been on Prevacid (is it solutabs?) for almost 2 wks & it’s the Marci-Kids dose & you’re giving it correctly… then her reflux pain is probably managed & her uncomfortableness is most likely intestinal pain from the formula – it’s SO hard to tell the difference b/w reflux & intestinal pain IMO sometimes!
Hang in there!erinntx2010-02-18 14:50:23

InactiveI’m sorry but your doctor does not sound well informed. Bloody stools is perhaps the most common indicator of MSPI. And as the others said, skin testing does not yield accurate results until at least age 2. What you are most likely dealing with is an intolerance, not an allergy. Have you tried Alimentium or Nutramigen?

InactiveAs far as the hypoallergenic formulas, we’ve only tried Pregestimil. I’ve wondered about trying one of the others, but our ped. and gastro. doctors insist it is the best one for her. We may need to try another, though, because things are not going well as is. I’m afraid to change anything because every time we do, she seems to get worse. We’re going for a 2nd opinion out of town next month. She just continues to be in so much pain, which is heartbreaking to see.
Thank you for your response. I agree. The more I read I see blood in stool is a common indicator of MSPI. Why do we seem to know more than the doctors (at least where I live)? What finally helped your baby?February 24, 2010 at 4:43 pm #65914hellbennt
KeymasterI also see you’re thickening w/ rice cereal- sorry if I repeat myself
– I hop on the computer and respond per post…
anyway I would guess that the cereal might be too much for your baby’s immature sensitive digestive system.
as for intolerances vs allergies this is really helpful
