InactiveHi there. this is long and I’m sorry…felt like I have to explain.. I am about to lose my mind and really need some helpful advice or another perspective from moms who might have been in similar situations. I have an almost 8 week old wiht GERD and we’ve been through everything, like most on this board. We finally switched to alimentum over a week ago and that finally seemed to help her, and, so far, we’ve tried prevacid compound, zantac, and now we’re trying prilosec compound. The prevacid gave her diarrheah and cramps after 5-6 days, so we stopped. We then tried zantac, which of course worked great for 2 days only, and when I noticed signs of sandifers I thought prilosec was worth trying. Well, here is what is happening:
Started alimentum 9 days ago and all seemed great- no gas, less fussing, and helped her poop. We started prilosec shortly after, so it’s been about 7-8 days. She was a totally different baby as of this past thursday- hardly any crying, happy, napping like a champ. Well, then all of a sudden friday she started having these awful sounds come from her tummy and she was in a lot of pain. Every time she eats a ton of noise comes from her tummy and you can even feel it- it wakes her up and she is back to crying and now she’s not sleeping either as she wiggles all night and has bad gas, like she’s trying to poop. You can hear her stomach across the room and even feel it, and, she cries out in pain. We didn’t give her prilosec dose today and she seemed better, but then she had two “blow outs” of major gas and poo, and tonight when she ate I heard the tummy again and she was irritable again. So, these are my questions:1. For those who have tried prilosec or similar dugs, would I notice side effects sooner than a week? She was fine until now, so, do you think this is the drugs causing the stomach trouble? she doesn’t have diarrhea, just gas and cramps really bad. Should I just stick it out for another week and let her get used to it? Or, is this a sign that this won’t work and I should stop immediately?2. For anyone who has tried alimentum, is is possible that it was great at first but then after a week it caused problems? I can’t imagine it would be worse the longer you are on it, but maybe?I am at my wits end. I am tempted to go back to zantac, but I am not even sure the prilosec is the problem. Maybe if she is good one day and horrible the next, it’s a stomach bug?I feel like I can’t take much more…my husband works nights and I’m taking care of her and my 3 year old by myself..I don’t know what to do and feel like I’m making wrong decisions- do I keep her on prilosec? I just find it hard to believe that she could do so great and then all of a sudden her stomach rejects it on day 8?help!!

Inactivehi! i dont know much about the prilosec but i do know that when my son was changed to the nutragiman formula which is the same as the alimentum, there was a honeymoon period of about a week. he did great then all of a sudden was vomiting, bad gas. it was horrible. i switched him to the soy formula and hes been great on that for 5 months now. i would call your dr and tell them whats going on. i think prilosec and prevecid are similar so maybe if she cant tolerate one she wouldnt b able to tolerate the other.

InactiveCheck out Laura’s groupie intro and read up on compounds. They may be part of the problem. Also check out marci-kids and use their dosing calculator to make sure you are the proper dose.

InactiveMaybe try Neocate. It is way more broken down. Then you will be able to largely rule out a milk sensitivity, which can cause MAJOR discomfort. Then you will know it is strictly the GERD you’re dealing with. I would think the gas and sounds in the tummy would indicate digestive issues, not just reflux issues. Neocate has made a HUGE difference for reflux babies on this site…all 3 of mine included!

I might try neocate and give it a good two or even three weeks.
at the same time, I’d go for prevacid in bufferbabies (it’s in prevacid 101)…
as you ‘wait’ for everything to ‘work’ you might want to try probiotics?
