InactiveWhich is more effective and accurate to show any allergy, reflux or anything?
Thank you!May 31, 2010 at 8:22 pm #66421hellbennt
Keymasterupper Gi loooks for structural abnormalities- does not always ‘show’ reflux- if baby/person is not actively refluxing at time of upper gi then it won’t show
endoscopy is camera
shows what exactly is going on- inflamation, ulceration, etc
they take biopsies- biopsies can show allergiesMay 31, 2010 at 9:27 pm #66422Anonymous
Inactiveso what are you recommend or prefer?
My daughter is 25M, with history of reflux when she was 6month old.
She starting to gag more often and throw up around 20M and she on feeding therapy since she has trouble with texture food.
The doctor wants to know what’s going on with her, why she gags easily, maybe something irritate her, the blood test show everything normal (the doctor said usually at this age, we can’t depend on blood test 100%).Thanks!

InactiveWe did skin pricks on ds at 28 months and it showed us his allergy to egg and then we did the blood test (RAST) to find out the severity of it. He also tested positive via skin prick for several environmental allergens as well. I would look into either skin prick or doing an elimination diet (cutting out possible offending foods and then reintroducing them) to see if you can find answers that way. If it is an intolerance problem though the only way to know is to eliminate the offending foods, they won’t show up with allergy testing. HTH.

InactiveI would do the endoscopy personally. we did it with my son, it was fast and pretty painless. If I were you I would want to see if there is any damage to her esphogus.. or if there is anything she is eating that is irritating her stomach. By showing any inflamation.
It sounds to me like something is upsetting her.Is she on a restricted diet of any kind??June 1, 2010 at 11:26 am #66426Anonymous
InactiveI think I would also check into an ENT. how enlarged are her tonsils/adenoids? possibly causing some of the gagging? sometimes they are enlarged due to allergies as well. I think, if it were me, I would do the endoscopy as well as the skin prick tests and also check into the ENT. the allergy testing can be confusing as a negative is not always a negative and an intolerance won’t show up on testing. I personally would do each of those and then utilize all of the results for decision what to do next.
hang in there!!!!June 1, 2010 at 1:34 pm #66427Anonymous
InactiveThank you Mommies!
Yeah I think I would do the endoscopy as well, because I don’t think DD would drink those barium thingy.
Anyway, she was on soy formula and still on soy formula (go and grow) till today, she’s doing fine on soy, since she was 6 month old.
And I think the problem started (or get worse) since I started to introduce or allow her to eat everything when she was 18m.
She has strong gag reflex (all her cousin are gagger lol as well as her dad) but something irritate her esophagus, so makes this gagging period worse than ever. She’s on prevacid 7.5ml once a day and klaire lab probiotic.
I though she was getting better on the dairy, because when I give her yogurt and cheese, she didn’ show any diarrhea or rash.
Now I stop her dairy and cheese since last week (but the doctor said could take a month to clear up from her system). The feeding therapist said, the irritation of her esophagus could interfered with her feeding (texture-gag-choke) so she’s the one that suggest to do the endoscopy.
The ped didn’t worry at all, since dd never been sick and on the 90th percentila (she’s 32lbs at 25m), but with the therapist and ped work together, so we doing all the test that we could). And the gagging periods worse in the morning after she wokes up 🙁
