InactiveAll my other kids were either over the hump or fine by now!! I am starting to get frustrated- my dr had us go do a barium swallow last friday, so i am curious what that will reveal. he does have laryngomalacia, wshich we already knew.
should i try for a different med? he was on 7.5mg a day, but I started giving him 15mg. No real improvment…Should I try a different formula? My second child got lots better after doing only the meds, but still was squirmy/not sleeping for a few months after. Once we started the alimentum, presto chango he was fine.So what gives? I am exhausted, and my other three kids ( 6 and under ) are totally being ignored! I haaaaaate this!June 27, 2010 at 11:40 am #66566Anonymous
InactiveI might personally try a higher dose of prevacid, it wasn’t until we were on 30mg/day that things really improved. If you try another formula I would guess your next option would be elecare/neocate which are really expensive. if you up the med dose with no improvement then I would try something like zegerid to see if that helps. Those are my suggestions. I wonder if they did the barium swallow to r/o pyloric stenosis? How old is your lo also?

InactiveI agree with Beth. I’d do prevacid 30mg. You might want to try it with buffer babies. Also make sure that you’re giving it correctly. If it’s the solutab, it’s supposed to be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a feeding 30-60 minutes later. Re: the barium swallow- was it an upper GI or a modififed barium swallow. I’d personally try to up the meds, then if that doesn’t do it after 2-3 weeks, then I’d try a formula change, but I wouldn’t do them both at the same time, or you might have a harder time figuring out what’s what. Good luck.

InactiveIm not sure the difference between a modified barium swallow and an upper gi. on the paper i had to take them, the “upper gi” box was checked, but he had to drink the barium. he had to lay flat while drinking it while they did a bunch of xray type pics. the lady i talked to on the phone said no he wouldn’t have to swallow barium, but when we got there….
he is 5 weeks old, so i know my dr is NOT going to do the 30 mg. she will probably be pissed when i tell her that i already upped it to 15mg. she did mention trying zegerid, and was aware of the issues ive read about it on here.just want some relief for him already!June 28, 2010 at 3:21 pm #66573Anonymous
InactiveYou had an upper gi, the MBS would have him sitting up most likely and monitoring if he aspirates anything or not. You have to do what you feel comfortable with, but I would try the 30mg/day and then if it does the trick tell her that you did it! Whatever you decide, good luck!

InactiveTrying a different formula such as an elemental/hypoallergenic formula (Neocate or EleCare) could help if there is an underlying milk protein allergy that is making your LO’s reflux worse. It is something you could bring up to your doctor and if you think you’d want to try Neocate let me know and we can send you some samples. If the formula does help and you make the switch some insurance companies cover Neocate and there is actually legislation in some states that require insurance companies to cover it. There is a ton of info about reimbursement @ neocate.com. I hope that helps and your LO starts feeling better soon!

InactiveTo second what a few people have mentioned, I upped my LO’s dose to 30 mg/day and THEN told the GI. She wasn’t thrilled, but agreed to go along with it when I explained how much things had improved. Sometimes a mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do!

InactiveMy dr’s nurse called back with the results of the barium swallow- “he has reflux”. NO SH******T!!! I thought the whole point of that test was to make sure there wasn’t anything structurally wrong! She also said to stop the prevacid and they called in compounded prilosec. I’ve nothing but headaches about that! She did say that they are referring me to GI specialist, so maybe I can get somewhere with that!!
I am all for the 30 mg prevacid a day- but I don’t know if I can use our current rx for 15 mg long enough before we ran out/saw results…hoping the specialist will be with it!helpforshermie- at what age/weight did you up your sons dosage? what was he on before you upped it.rachel- neocate is on the back of my mind, if it seems like the meds aren’t cutting it. thanks for the info on the insurance, im saving it to my favorites…June 29, 2010 at 11:06 am #66577hellbennt
Keymasterprilosec? I understand trying to switch if one PPI doesn’t work…but what dose of prilosec? tell them to just rx you the capsules and then get bufferbabies and make your own compound…

Inactivei really didn’t hear what dose too well, cuz my ears were steaming already- i think she said 1 ml?!?!

InactiveHe was almost 4 months old when we got to that dose. We had switched to solutabs after compounded Prilosec didn’t seem to help. He was about 12 lbs at that point- he stopped gaining weight there for awhile. We started on 15 mg/day, then went to 22.5 and saw better improvement, so while I was waiting the 6 weeks it took to see the GI for our first appt, I upped it to 30. He started sleeping better almost immediately. That combined with a fairly restricted diet for me gave us back a happy baby!
