InactiveOK so my baby is 5 weeks old and has been spitting up forcefully since around 2 weeks!! it comes out her nose and everything. While she is awake or asleep. She has had a stuffy nose since i can remember. The doctor thinks its reflux. They put her on pepcid and i have not noticed any improvement. She is gainging weight she is just fussy because she cant hold things down and you can tell shes uncompfortable. So any way i have switched her formula to Nutramigen as of today and she drank it with out putting her nose up to it!! HOwever she is still spitting up not as bad though. HOwever it seems to be clear and it will sort of dribble eout her nose is thisnormal??? and a few times today she did spit forecefully?? Any one have an feed back or any avice for me?? PLease i cant even take it, i am constantly covered in spit up and trough up and with a crying baby girl. I also did switch to dr. browns bottles and noticed a little improvement?? help me please!!

Keymasterhi there!
I have a lot to say…it’s loong, but truly will help you!
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853the spitting up is ‘ok’ if there isn’t pain involved and it’s not effecting weight gain….
give the new formula a good two weeks before you switch again
how much does baby weigh?
here’s a chart to convert pounds to kilos:
http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htmonce you have weight in kilos, you can check your baby’s pepcid dose :

InactiveI would give her a couple of weeks on the Nutramigen, and if you don’t see any improvement she may still be reacting to the milk proteins in the formula and need to switch to an elemental (which is 100% dairy-free). Your doctor might also be able to recommend a different med. Sometimes it is hard to eliminate the spitting up completely, but if she is still forcefully spitting up and seems like she is in pain (crying etc.) then you should def. keep trying to find the best combo of meds/formula for her. Hang in there!

InactiveThank you so much for your reply!! Its been a little over a week on the nutramigen and i have seen litle improvement. But she does however seem to be a happier baby. She is not as cranky but she is still spitting up. The actual spit up though is like a watery mix that just keeps pouring out!! and when its forceful it dribbles out her nose!! so strange.. I am going to give it a little while longer and then maybe change her meds.. Any other advice is welcomed thank you so much !!

Keymasterhave you checked the pepcid dose, for something to ‘do’ in the meantime
?
how much does your baby weigh?July 13, 2010 at 10:31 pm #66690Anonymous
InactiveI have checked with the pharmacy and they have her on 40mg pepcid once a day at.5ml. she weighs 9lbs 8 oz. So i am confused as to how much to give her and do you kno if mg is same as ml?? Maybe it is her doseage but i am not sure because i can not make heads or tails out of the info i have found!!
July 14, 2010 at 9:51 am #66693hellbennt
Keymasterok, mgs is a measure of the medicine (think ‘pill’), ml is liquid measurement (think ‘pill’ made into a liquid) and
kilos is weight of your baby.your baby weighs 9lbs 8 oz.
first we need to convert this to kilos.
so, I check this chart http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htm
which tells me your baby’s weight in kilos is 4.3
next, I need to find out what the pepcid dose is for a baby of this weight
and I look here:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8288&PN=1Infants < 3 months: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given once dailyInfants 3 – 12 months: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given twice daily
ok so now we know that your baby who is less that 3 months should be getting 0.5mgs per kilo one time a day
this means that for every kilo your baby weighs, she should be getting .5mgs of the medicine pepcid.
so, one kilo is .5mgs, 2 kilos is .5 x 2 = 1mg,
3 kilos is .5 x 3 = 1.5mgs
we get this by multiplying .5 x 4.3 = 2.15mgs of pepcid a dayyou say your bottle says 40mgs/ml?
my math skills are making me crazy, because what I think to do next is then divide 2.15 by 40 and I get .054 and you say you’re giving .5mls?
please call your pharmacist and ask how many MiliGramS a day your baby is getting of the pepcidJuly 14, 2010 at 4:29 pm #66695Anonymous
Inactiveyes i will be sure to call my pharm, acist and see what they have to say because she still seems to be forcefully spitting today all day! I feel terrible for her and i just cant take it anymore. I feel like im doing everything that the doctors tell me and that she still doesnt seem better. Also she has thrush for the second time and i cant seem to get rid of it for the poor baby. I wash her bottles well, binkys after every use ect. Somethings gotta give because my lil one doesnt deserve to feel miserable like this all the time. I read some where that the thrush is common in babies with spitting issues because it creats a warm moist environment in thier little mouths consistantly. Thank you soo much for looking that up for me i also looked it up but was to confused to figure it out. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!! thanx a bunch caylyn

Keymasternothing will stop the spitting up, just the pain.
for the thrush give PROBIOTICS! https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8970&PN=1
also helps reflux babies in general!also: diflucan is the best medication to treat it. it seems like the ped gi put my kids on it for a week to 10 days. (this is from christine, kevieb who is an EXPERT on thrush!!!)

InactiveYes her spitting up is still painful you can tell it hurts!! She arches her back and cries inconsolably after wards. Its a diffrent cry than when she is hungry or wet ect… Yeah the thrush has been treated twice with neostatin in the mouth with cheese cloth but i can not seem to get rid of it once and for all. I wil ask about diflucan and see if that is an option!! my poor little baby… thank you so mcuh for everything you have told me

is to TELL via fax.

InactiveMy son started having those problems from birth as well. He is now almost 9 months old and very healthy. They called it reflux at that age and when that didn’t work we ended up in the ER new years eve because of vomiting. He had pyloric stenosis which you should look into. It causes forceful vomiting and begins to get really bad around 12 weeks or less. It requires a simple surgical fix. After thet he was healthy but because of his extremely bad reflux as well and sensitive stomach we had another 3 hospital stays and alot of checks run. We have finally fixed his reflux enough that he can eat and drink like normal in the last 2 months but his reflux was a rare case. The pyloric stenosis may be the problem and may fix everything. It stopped my sons pain and forceful vomiting.

InactiveMy son was a HUGE spitter. He spit up all or most of what he ate nearly every feeding. I don’t know how he lived. He did not have pyloric stenosis, just very severe reflux. I think generally the spitting is projectile with pyloric stenosis, meaning it flies across the room. My son did splatter the walls from time to time, but most the time it just flew a few inches from his face. When you say, “foreceful”, do you mean projectile? If so, I’d definitely have that checked out.
I’d definitely ask for diflucan for the thrush. My dd had thrush and we used diflucan. It was easy to give and cured her in a matter of a couple of days.
And read Laura’s advice about meds. Most docs don’t dose our poor reflux babies correctly and they continue to suffer.
