Inactivehello everyone
i’ve been lurking for awhile but decided i should post (sorry for any spelling mistakes, i’m typing onr handed).my son started having symptoms of reflux at 1 week old (he is 3 weeks old now). he wants to nurse constantly for comfort (often doesnt take much and is the only way he will fall asleep, and never sleeps long.he also spits up alot, arches his back, gets hiccups, cries out in pain, coughs/gags in his sleep, etc. he also does this red faced bearing down thing with lots of gas. he is breastfed and has normal bowel movements, and is gaining weight well (probably cause he nurses all the time).he started on zantac at 2 weeks old but we’ve seen no difference. he takes 15mg twice a day (he weighs 8 lbs. 12.5 ounces).our family doctor is not comfortable prescribing anything else so we are awaiting a ped referral. hopefully prevacid will help.i’m sort of at my wits end and think i’m getting post partum depression. he’s just never happy, always crying when awake and wants to nurse 24/7. i tried a wrap but he hates it. i’m stuck sitting with him all the time.any suggestions would be appreciated.Thanks.November 1, 2010 at 6:17 pm #67247hellbennt

InactiveHi there! I currently have a LO, that I’m breastfeeding, with multiple food allergies/intolerances. I wonder if you have considered the possibility that your LOs reflux-y symptoms (spiting up, hiccups, coughing, gagging and arching his back) could be the result of an untreated milk protein allergy? Sometimes it’s possible that MSPI can cause reflux symptoms and if he does have a milk protein allergy the reflux meds won’t work alone.
Luckily my guy doesn’t have reflux or colic but he’s had blood in his stool and some really bad diapers. I am on an elimination diet and have cut out dairy (all sources/hidden dairy), soy, wheat, egg, and nuts. Maybe you could try eliminating dairy and soy from your diet to see if it makes a difference? You might not see a difference right away because it can take time for the milk and soy proteins to leave your system and your LO’s system. It’s definitely fustrating! I just had a set back over the weekend after eating humus… I thought it was safe but I think he reacted to the seasame paste in the humus 🙁 You’re not alone! Good luck!Rachel_Neocate2010-11-03 12:52:37
