InactiveDS was born 8.5 weeks early. He spent 4 weeks in the nicu where he was diagnosed with reflux, but never medicated for it. DS is now 11 weeks old. He has the “classic” reflux symptoms – back arching, hiccups, noisy breathing, etc., no spit up though. About 3 weeks ago, DS started crying in the middle of the bottle and fought to finish it. At the time, we were feeding 4oz of Neosure every 4 hours. We were prescribed Zantac a week and a half ago, but it did not seem to make a difference. The last few days, DS has all but refused to eat – he’ll take a few sips, then cry any time the bottle comes near his mouth. We tried smaller, more frequent feedings, burping, holding upright. He’s lost 5oz in the last 2 days. We went back to the ped and got Prevacid today.
Is the crying, head shaking and kicking while eating a sign of reflux? How long does it take for the Prevacid to start to help him? Is there anything else we can do to make eating more comfortable? Is it possible that he’s associating the pain with the bottle, thereby making feeding even more difficult?Thank you for the help, we’re about at our wits end and don’t know where to turn. DS and I spent most of the day crying, and DH doesn’t quite know how to handle us.

Keymasteroh mama!
sorry to take so long to respond to you!once you start w/ a PPI, I’d make sure to give the zantac, too, making sure to give it 4hrs seperate from the prilosec/prevacid/PPI.IT can take up to two weeks for the prevacid to ‘kick in’ and this is IF it’s the proper form and dose and administration!find the highest dose for zantac and GIVE IT TOO!this is explained here (don’t just take my word on it!):Then I wouldn’t ask, I’d TELL dr the dose you need, using the information from the link above…and I’d give the highest dose…Then I would check out http://www.marci-kids.com and figure out the PROPER dose for your baby& then I would check outPrevacid 101 (last post on the page) and read all about PPIs (prilosec, prevacid):then I would decide what FORM of prevacid (or prilosec) to try.Personally, I would go for (& did go for) Bufferbabies (it’s explained in prevacid 101)…Hang in there!I have a LOT to say, & most of it is here, in a link called Groupie Intro:this is looong, but please read/scroll/skim through it and refer back to it often, as it TRULY will help you
.there is info about WHY a baby might get reflux, about reflux and how it might be related to diet/allergies/intolerances (these are to PROTEINS in breastmilk or formula, proteins such as milk and/or soy)…there is a link to finding a ped GIthere is a link called ‘Prevacid 101’ – read this as it tells about zantac dosing, too and also prilosec…basically, there is a LOT of info to help you & we’re here, too!hang in there & so glad you found us!and get a sling! (babywearing SAVED US!) – there’s a link from Groupie Intro 🙂November 12, 2010 at 9:48 pm #67274Anonymous
InactiveAww poor little guy! ITA with hellbennt, and from the reflux-y symptoms (back arching, hiccups and noisy breathing) you’ve described it’s possible that your LO could have a milk protein allergy AND reflux. Often milk protein allergies can cause or even make reflux worse, which could be the case for your DS. I would recommend not only talking to your ped about the meds but also asking about an elemental formula. Elemental formulas (like Neocate and Elecare) are 100% hypoallergenic because they don’t contain any milk proteins. Instead elemental formulas are made up of individual amino acids (the building blocks of proteins); this makes them the safest and easiest for LOs with allergies to digest. I hope things get better soon!!
