My 9-week old weighs about 11 pounds. She had an upper GI which showed reflux (we could hear it gurgling and she never slept well) and has been on prilosec suspension for a week, and it’s becoming ineffective. At first she slept great at night and screamed less – it was a miracle! And last night she is back to waking a lot, hungry with drool coming out of her mouth, all signs of reflux for her.

I sent in an order for CaraCream-Z and am planning to mix the zegerid myself. But until I get the starter kit, is there anything I can make at home to hold her over? How would I know the dose since the Marci website is down? I don’t want her to be in pain and me to lose so much sleep when something OTC could help her. I just don’t know how to give it to her.

Ok so to answer your question (the answer should be found in Prevacid 101; there is a link from Groupie Intro):

yes: you can buy prevacid capsules OTC and break them open.

give on an empty stomach- you give the beads from the capsule- give them w/ a teaspoon of applesauce- you can do this even w/ a newborn- wash down w/ water

However, since you’re going the zegerid route, and the PPI in zegerid is prilosec, then look for prilosec OTC in capsule form…I don’t know if it comes this way OTC?

Using prevacid and then prilosec doesn’t ‘do’ anything harmful, but for the sake of consistancy, it’s worth a shot?

Thanks, Laura. I just needed the information about the applesauce together with the dose chart – perfect! The doctor only prescribed 4mg twice a day, and that isn’t nearly enough for my 2-month old. So I’m going to get some applesauce and increase the prilosec until my caracream-z arrives in the mail. Luckily I have some prilosec in capsule form that was prescribed to me for my own reflux problem. I guess most people just have to try to eye-ball how many beads make up the appropriate dose? I don’t see how else one would do it.

how many mgs per capsule? that way just use all the beads in one dose or the other, lol

Well there are 20mg in a capsule, and I need 7.5mg three times a day. So I was thinking about trying to split the beads in the 20mg capsule three ways. But that still is not quite the full dose. It’s a lot more than she’s getting now though!

ok you could try 10 mg 2x a day and see how it goes?

if you have any zantac you can give that, too, spacing it 4 hrs from the prevacid…

or you could try splitting the beads 3 ways…and still give zantac (if you have it)- it can take up to 14 days for you to see the effects of the PPI – how long has your baby been on PPI?

please go to the upper right–hand corner of this screen and click on ‘Settings’ and, from there, you can edit your Signature and let us know how old baby is (can be month & year), name (or nickname if you prefer), breastfeeding, TED diet (or what you’re eating/avoiding), what meds and what doses and form of meds and how you’re administering-thanks

It’s been 48 hours that my 9-week old has been on about 7mg of prilosec three times a day (before she was on a much lower dose for about ten days). I am mixing the beads from regular pills in about 1/2 tsp of applesauce as recommended here. And she slept for two major blocks of time last night!!! And today she was much less fussy and slept a lot more. BINGO. 🙂

Now I am just anxiously awaiting getting caracream-z in the mail so that we can start zegerid. The bad thing about the prilosec is trying to get it in her 30 minutes before a feeding. That is just virtually impossible. Once I stimulate her mouth with the meds, she wants to EAT and EAT NOW. She screamed for 15 minutes today and I finally gave in and fed her – didn’t wait the full 30 minutes. I’m glad Zegerid will solve this problem.
