InactiveCan someone help with this combination of meds? My ds has been on Prevacid and Propananol (for hemangiomas-one is in his airway),now GI doc is adding Bethanechol. I was told by the pharmacist to keep the prevacid and Propananol 2 hours apart since prevacid changes the ph and that is not good for the propananol (which is three times a day 5am, 1pm, 9pm). I give the prevacid at 7am and 7pm. Now how do I work in Bethanechol FOUR times a day??? Oh, BTW the pharmacist also told me to give the bethanechol before (“appetizer”) and Prevacid after (“dessert”)–but I have been doing them at the same time (or maybe 30 min apart) before nursing. Glad I have read the info here before with my dd.
Thanks for any help. Oh, and does anyone have any comments about Bethanechol ( my dd has been taking it for 2 yrs and now ds). Any long term problems I should be concerned about?

Keymasterwhat I have found doesn’t answer your question, sorry- you’ll have to ask the pharmacist? but anyway, does your baby have confirmed DGE (delayed gastric emptying?)- sometimes medicine is used to confirm it, but what if you didn’t give it and gave the PPI two weeks so you could see if it was helping?(how long has baby been on PPI?)anyway, I did a search on bethanecol for you:effects from bethanechol?more discussion about bethanecholHere is a thread from a while back which partly discusses bethanechol. Hopefully you may find it useful:pkkb, Nov 2006 wrote: Kaelyn was on both of them at different times. Neither of them worked for her, so we didn’t do them for long. Reglan has some scary side effects, but at the appropriate dose can be really effective. Kaelyn acted a little loopy for the first week that she was on bethanechol, but after that we didn’t have any problems with it.

InactiveHe has been on PPI for about 2 months, but seems worse in the last 2-3 weeks. He orginially started zantac then was dx with the hemangiomas and started one round of steriods. The ENT doc started the prevacid with Zantac to protect his stomach from the steriods. I weaned ds off both when I stopped the steriods. The about a month later he started not sleeping, trouble nursing (stiffing legs, pulling head back, popping off and crying) so Pedi md started prevacid. no improvement so I went to my dd GI.
No ds had not been dx with delayed emptying. The GI just went from Prevacid to adding Bethanechol, like that was the normal next step. I asked about increasing the Prevacid dose since he is on 7.5 mg twice a day and wt is 6.5 kg. By what I read he should be able to take 7.5 three times a day unless I misread. But the GI doc said no ds was at the max.
I am trying the elimation diet for the last week but no change. I had already cut out all dairy (my dd is still dairy free after 2 yrs), nuts, eggs and obvious soy. Cut out all soy, corn and wheat over the last week. no progress yet.
Thanks for the info. Maybe I should ask to just try the Zantac with the Prevacid again for a little while. My problem is I don’t know if this is what I should ask for or not.

KeymasterI would try marci-kids dosing of PPI and also zantac and give that a good try for 2 or even 3 weeks…keep up w/ your diet? why are you on the diet?
have you seen improvement from it? since you’re already on it I wouldn’t say to go off it! But I would say to try meds (PPI & zantac) and see what happens…January 23, 2011 at 4:09 pm #67706Anonymous
InactiveI am only doing the diet since my dd had trouble with dairy. I have not seen any improvement and have started adding wheat back. I was just trying anything. I think I will try Zantac and Prevacid. I will talk with my pedi doc about the prevacid dose. thanks for the info. I am not a big fan of Bethanchol b/c I have not heard very good things about side effects, however it did help my dd. We are weaning her from it now. Ds is still very uncomfortable today. I have been looking for calcuim carbanate (a maalox or mylanta) how ever only find liquid form with both calcuim carbante AND magnesium. Hope to get Zantac Monday (think I have a refill at pharmacy).
