InactiveMy son is 8 weeks old and had bad acid reflux and suspected milk/soy protein allergy, and needs to have his feeds thickened. Since day 1 my son could not hold down formula, so his ped kept switching formulas. He did the best on Nutramigen, thickened w/1 tbsp of rice for every 2oz . He ended up in hospital for failure to thrive b/c of the spit up/vomiting and weight loss. They ruled out pyloric stenosis and that feeds have to be thickened so he doesn’t aspirate. He is on 24 calorie feeding. He was put on Zantac and started to gain weight. When he came home he became increasingly agitated, not sleeping and unconsolable. His GI Dr put him on Neocate (6th formula) with the rice, and his attitude greatly improved, but the reflux was constantly in this throat, and he was vomiting again to the point of bile coming up, the Neocate is thinner. I thickened it more with no improvement. Oatmeal did not work any better, so I tried Simply Thick. He was holding things down better, but he gets SO MUCH gas, he is worse than a grown man. It is hard to burp him, and he is constantly farting and twisting himself into a pretzel in pain, which is causing more spit up. I really think the problem is that he is getting too much air when he eats, I can see the air bubbles in the bottle and cannot get rid of them no matter what I do. The Simply Thick is causing the air bubbles. Now when he spits up, there is air bubbles in the spit up. I use Dr Browns bottles and level 3 nipples. I don’t know what to do, all his ped wants to do is keep changing formulas, and the gi dr is pretty much out of advice, she wants to put him on Bethanechol? to make his stomach empty faster, but I don’t want to do that since I have read it has not been studied in children. Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED, as I am at my wits end and have already extended my maternity leave with no pay……

InactiveHe did have a swallow study and he needs nectar consistency, which I use the nectar consistancy packets, he just has so much painful, rotten gas afterwards with the Simply Thick.

InactiveI’m so sorry for the trouble your experiencing with your new baby and I hope it gets better soon. I know how hard it is and how it’s so painful and stressful to watch this happen to your baby.
Here is my comment – and I admit I am in complete ignorance so this could be bad advise. We use Dr. Brown Level 3 as well and I use this cereal to thicken b/c it’s so fine and disolves well instead of leaving flakes and doesn’t get caught in the nipple. However!!!! My son is 8 months old and on Neocate as well but I don’t know if it’s safe for your baby at so young of an age. It’s called HappyBellies organic baby cereals and has probiotic as well. Ingredients are: Organic Whole Grains, Organic Brown rice, Sunflower lecithin, DHA: algal powder, glucose syrup solids, algal oil, modified starch, minnitol, sodium ascorbate, sodium polyphosphate, high oleic sunflower oil, enzymes: alpha amylase, vitamins/minerals: ascorbic acid, calcium pohsphate, calcium carbonate, reduced iron, alpha tocopoheryl acetate, thiamine hydrocholoride, riboflavin, niacinamide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, cyanocobalmin, zinc oxide: Probiotics: l acidophilus, bifidislactis, l bulgaricus, lcasei, streptococcus thermophilus, and l rhamnosus. No dairy, no soy, no gluten, no wheat. Also, with the exception of the probiotics, many of these same ingredients are in the Neocate as I have compared the list.Another parent may have some insight if this is a good or terrible idea – or maybe keep it in your back pocket for when your little one is older?Best of luck. You aren’t alone!January 28, 2011 at 4:52 pm #67748Anonymous
InactiveThank you for your advice ngarcia. I saw that you said that you use the cereal to thicken the Neocate. My only concern is the amylase enzyme, I’ve heard that it breaks down and makes the cereal and formula runny, which would put him at risk for aspiration. The consistency has to stay the same, his stomach also empties very slow, causing him reflux, even 2-3hrs after a feed. Does the consistency break down f

InactiveSorry about that…. Does it break down for you after you add the cereal? Thanks again!!

KeymasterCollin’s mom:
I would consult w/ the person who did the swallow study and ask her/him who you can speak to about thickening-a nutritionist that knows this kind of thing, since you need something very specific… -
