InactiveHi all!
We had our first GI appointment today and she is quite certain our 4 1/2 month old has IBS. She didn’t want to medicate (thank you!) and said she simply needs some fiber in her diet to settle down her tummy.
Basically she said either give her a tiny dose of benefiber per day or introduce something like avocado to her diet. I wasn’t going to introduce solids until 6 mos…but if it will help her…then that’s great. Plus, the thought of getting something real into her diet sounds wonderful since i wasn’t able to breastfeed.
She is on neocate and her poops are mostly liquid and somewhat mucousy. The GI wants me to start thickening a bit w/ some earth’s best brown rice cereal. I know there is tons of info on this here – but I’m curious what it did to your LO’s stools…particularly those on neocate. She’s finally not constipated so I’m hesitant! Wouldn’t a wee bit of oatmeal keep her more regular?
What would you do? She kinda tossed all of those ideas out to try and i’m not sure what will help….

KeymasterI have never heard of such a thing. is this a ‘good’ ped GI?

InactiveI have never heard of this before but would be interested to see what happens with the Benefiber…I would think for a little one, that might give them more tummy issues. How much benefiber are you giving her?

InactiveHey Laura –
We were referred by our ped which we love. She’s been in practice for 25 years. She seemed pretty legit?
Hi Emily –
I haven’t tried it yet b/c I’m just trying to think through it all, still! She said to start w/ 1/2 teaspoon a day. I know…it seems like she is so little for it. But, I understand the IBS – classic remedy is adding fiber. But, if she were 6 months+ that would be easier!

Keymastermy question:
even if there are issues w/ neocate then I would be thinking more along the lines of FPIES? I TRULY do not know! just typing alound & giving you more to research…do a search here for a mama named Tracy and FPIES…February 25, 2011 at 7:50 am #67934Anonymous
InactiveUgh – I know! It’s so frustrating trying to figure this out. Even w/ the neocate you think maybe FPIES? She doesn’t vomit on it – just spitty. The first day, she did..but that’s it. I’ll click on your helpful link and see if anything else lines up. I would describe her as just having a sour tummy…all day….

InactiveAngie, Laura sent me a link. This is Eli’s mom, Tracy. My heart goes out to you. When I read posts of moms going through what we went through it takes me right back to that period of time when Eli was a baby that was SO hard. I will say, he’s now a very healthy and happy seven and a half yr old, there is hope! lol
I’m sorry, I haven’t gone back and read your history (if you’ve written it) but I gather you’re trying to decide whether to add fiber to Callie’s neocate? I’m a HUGE “neocate only” advocate, but I’d be the first to say it’s been over four years since I was engrossed in the FPIES issue and I haven’t kept up on recent developments. My experience was this, the time and energy we spent doing “neocate ONLY” was by far the best thing we did for Eli. It didn’t make everything “all better” immediately, but it did give him three years to cool off his immune system and quit reacting to everything . If I can be of help, please dont hesitate to ask…..

InactiveHi Tracy!
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
What were Eli’s main symptoms for his fpies? Also, did he have reflux? Your signature states that he didn’t…or maybe that’s just the present:) If he did when he was a wee one, what meds did he tolerate? I’m in the middle of figuring out Callie’s meds (Laura…as you know from other threads!!) as I’m wondering if the solutabs are causing her tummy cramping.
That is awesome that he is now a healthy 7 1/2 year old! These days right now are SOO long and trying. I want so much for her to be at peace in her belly and it sounds like you remember it like yesterday, eh?

InactiveI forgot to ask – do you remember how long it took Eli to really get used to the neocate? That is another thought I had about Callie – this moaning/tummy cramping could be that she is just not used to it yet…
She’s been on it for 2 1/2 wks and I would think it would be gradually getting better…but it’s staying the same. That’s why I’ve turned to thinking it’s the prevacid…..but really….it’s just a mystery at the moment. I can see where the GI is coming from with the thought of IBS b/c of her symptoms…but then I think that was just a ‘easy’ diagnoses and very broad? Anyway….I’m all over the map w/ trying to figure her out!

Keymasterso try another form of prevacid? are you still giving the solutabs? babies can react to the aspertame, the inactive ingredients, the coloring, the flavoring, etc. Try just getting capsules?

InactiveHey Laura – yeah – I know – I’ve got to get them and plan to do so tomorrow…..
You know…I really think it’s gas pains. I’m not 100% – but after mulling over this for a couple of wks now – I think that’s it. Ugh – I HOPE it is indeed the prevacid and NOT the neocate – I’m at a loss otherwise!!! We have 10 cases of it b/c it’s the only thing she’s done remotely well on. Anyway…calling the GI tomorrow for her to call in the capsules and will start those right away. THANK YOU for the tip on that, Laura. Hope to report great news that her tummy pains calm down thereafter…please…please…

Keymasterok check prevacid dose first at http://www.marci-kids.com or from the Prevacid 101 post
and then TELL dr what rx you want & that you want the capsules.if you give capsules, give the ‘beads’ on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. give the beads w/ 1 tsp of applesauce- use your finger if you can’t use a spoon- wash down w/ water- I like using skinny 1ml syringes…FAX FAX FAX the dr
stick to the FACTS (no emotions and ramblings)
state current meds, doses & symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
provide pharmacist name & contact infofollow up by calling office to tell them fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests made in fax, ie:
is RX called in yet?sample fax: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10633&PID=90325#90325

InactiveLove it! Totally agree on the short but sweet thing.
Hubby has a fax machine at work – we haven’t tried that – but surely could do it that way.
Do you really think this will help her gas? It is just so strange that a different form would make a difference. Oh…oh…i HOPE!! It would be incredible.
Headed to marcikids.
