InactiveHi all, My name is Alex and I am a proud father of a four month old daughter. My daughter had a series issue with Colic from about six weeks until a bit past three months old, and also has had moderate to severe acid reflux. She was on Axid for the first month to help with the reflux, then shifted to Zantac because the Axid was not working. The Zantac seems to be helping. In the past two weeks however, my daughter has had two bouts of severe pain spasms where she cries in excruciating pain. Her face grimaces (lips stretch wide across her face), her arms go straight out and her body tenses like a board. The best way to describe it is that she being “tazed”, like with a police tazer. It comes on suddenly, lasts about 5-10 seconds, then goes away. It then repeats every 30 seconds to 3 minutes. In each case that this has happened, these episodes have lasted between 4-7 hours. We’ve taken her to the emergency room both times because she is truly in wicked pain and it’s very different crying that anything we’ve experienced before. It’s really scary. Doctors first said she had inteceception, then said she had a virus, and most recently they insist it’s acid reflux. They’ve given her another medication to battle reflux but i just have a hard time believing that her spasms of intense pain are because of reflux. I know she has reflux, but I don’t think these episodes are because of reflux. It just doesn’t add up and I’m frustrated that the doctors won’t consider any other problems. Have any of you had similar issues with your babies? Could this be because of reflux? Many thanks for any insights you can provide. Alex

InactiveDo you think they may be seizures? Look up infantile spasms and see if they look similar. My son has reflux but never anything like you have described.
I’m not suggesting that they are seizures, but better to rule that out right.Good luck.March 21, 2011 at 6:07 pm #68030hellbennt
KeymasterSandifer’s Syndrome
it’s the body’s way of addressing severe pain.I have a LOT to say and most of it’s here, it’s looong but PLEASE read/skim/scroll through it & refer back to it often- look for Sandifer’s symptoms here it’s called Groupie Intro:please research all you can here, there is so much information!hang in there! you’ve found a great place!from the link above, look for a link called Prevacid 101– this is important, as a PPI medication is most likely the next plan of action…as for the axid, and the zantac, from Prevacid 101 (the link is in Groupie Intro) there is also a link where you can look up the PROPER dose for your baby…so much more to help you with, but you’re off to a great start!so glad you found us!laura -
