InactiveDS is three and a half months old and weighs 14 #, 7 oz. He started out on Zantac at around 6 weeks but switched to Prevacid when he started refusing to eat. Prevacid wasn’t working well at all until we doubled the dose last week. He seems much happier and is cooing and smiling, but he’s been refusing to eat again. This is especially bad b/c the last couple days I haven’t been able to get a good feeding in within the right window of time for the Prevacid to have maximum effect. It’s very stressful being on a feeding timeline and having DS refuse to eat. He ate at 4:00 a.m. today, I gave him meds when he FIRST started waking up at 8:00, and then tried to feed him at 8:30…no luck. He was smiling at me and laughing (and sometimes leaning back and fussing) but absolutely NOT eating. DH kept trying to squeeze milk into him from a bottle and then DS fell asleep.
–Did this happen to you? How did you handle it??
–I’m thinking of asking if our doctor will consider switching to Zegerid b/c it doesn’t have to be timed w/ food, but it sounds like a huge hassle with the mixing and the Mylanta. What do you all think of this?

InactiveHi Nicole-
I just wanted to check in and see if your son started to eat. I just started my dd (15 wks old, 12.5#) 2 days ago on Prevacid (6mg, 2x per day) and she is eating less than the little she already was eating. Every meal is a struggle, though I do my best to keep a cheery face for her sake. Did you find the prevacid started to work, ie- your son started to eat more? Good luckApril 1, 2011 at 7:20 pm #68090Anonymous
InactiveShort on time, but this sounds like our situation. Our 11 week old 12 1/2 # baby boy was started on Zantac at 2 weeks, helped for a while but never stopped the reflux so he was switched to prevacid 15 mg at 8 weeks. Prevacid worked okay but after a few weeks he was back to arching, not eating, pain. One week ago we added the zantac back in. So he rotates the prevacid and zantac (spacing them at least 4 hours apart). He’s like a new baby! No more arching or crying, sleeping great, eating without any problems. He’s on prevacid 15 mg 2x a day and zantac .6 mg 2x a day. Hope this helps!

InactiveLiamzmom-
Thank you for your reply. Did your son start eating again right when you started the Zantac or did it take awhile for him to start? I’m really nervous about how long it is going to take to break her aversion. Can I ask what your feeding schedule is–how much and how often? And is he breastfed or formula? So glad to hear that meds are working for some you out there. The prevacid already has me frustrated, since I have to wait effectively a minimum of 3.5 hours between feedings. Today my daughter was so hungry that she wouldn’t fall asleep but I had to wait to feed her before the 3 hours elapsed so give her the prev andthen another 30 minutes before I could feed her. Poor girl fell asleep in my arms during the feed and then attempted to stay asleep while I tried to get a burp out of her. Urgh…just venting.

InactiveWithin a day after adding the zantac, he was eating well again. What helped us was spacing out the zantac and prevacid so the acid was always ‘covered’ (in case the meds wore off since babies metabolism is fast). Prevacid 7.5 mg at 6am and 6pm and Zantac .6 mg at 12 noon and as close to his midnight feed as possible. We haven’t been able to keep the feeds exactly 3-4 hours apart, but just try and give him prevacid as close to 30 minutes before his next feed as possible. We started out with breastmilk and ended up on formula by 8 weeks; after trying regular and soy formula we ended up on hypoallergenic nutramigen lipil. He drinks about 4 oz every 3-4 hours with a tsp rice per 2 ounces.liamzmom2011-04-02 01:55:04

InactiveTHanks, this is great. Sorry to return so late to this post! He suddenly started eating without struggles on the 29th (almost 2 weeks after we increased his Prevacid dosage) and since then, except for a few relapses, we’ve been on a really good streak. It’s like it finally kicked in enough for him. In the last few days he started spitting up more again, but we’re going to try adding in some rice cereal and that may do the trick. I’m hoping this is the peak (he’s four months old this weekend). If it is, we’re in decent shape.

InactiveThank you for the info on Carafate!! This is good to know about in case he stops eating again, or if we have a future baby with the same issues.
That original post in the link above about bottle aversion is totally how he would act. We would just try to put him in feeding position and he would start arching and crying. Poor little guy. Thank goodness he’s doing better.

InactiveAND…so, so ironic. Nanny said he’s not eating again today. My theory is the recent spitting up increase has irritated his esophagus again. 🙁 We’re trying rice cereal right away (per pedi) and if that doesn’t work I’ll suggest the Carafate. I am thinking/hoping we will be back on track soon.
