Inactive…I am going to try to wean Aidan off the prevacid withing the next month..he will be 5 months old on the 5th and his reflux seems a lot better..he started solids, no issues other than gas from the green veggies..I am very very very wary of using alternative medicine for him, but seeing so many moms on here use it on their little ones I decided to give it a chance. I have done all the searches on the forum for aloe vera and probiotics, and was wondering if anyone knew of any NEGATIVE effects they might have? I am of the opinioin that every positive has some negative and would like to know if anyone expierenced any negative effects when they put their kids on these…thanks

InactiveNevermind on the Aloe, just researched a bit on the net and found multiple sites saying it was not suitable for infants as their digestive systems are not mature enough to handle it and it can cause kidney failure….so just need to know if anyone has had a neg. reaction to the probiotics.

InactiveWe have never had a reaction to probiotics. I just wanted to add that I am a very big fan of them. We use Natrol Acidophilus and she has been on them for about 2.5 months. We give them at least once a day sometimes twice.

Inactivewe just tried Probiotics this afternoon and i don’t know if it’s fluke or coincidence or what but i have noticed a remarkable difference in Jaxon’s eating. I’m not going to count my chicks before they are hatched or anything but i’m hoping real hard!
He was only eating 3 oz max every 3-4 hrs and actually ‘asked’ (cried) to be fed for the first time since this all began! Keep your fingers crossed for us.
Jill, I was really hesitant to try out alternative medicine(s) as well, but went and asked at the health food store. They usually have a ton of information and pamphlets on nearly everything. Good Luck!April 25, 2006 at 10:25 pm #6850Anonymous
InactiveYep just gave him his first dose this afternoon in his avacado..he only eats a bit more than that 4 oz every 3-4 hours though lately he has begun upping it to 4 oz every 2 hours, but actually now that you mention it he did seem hungrier for a while after I gave it to him!! Had to feed him some carrots (he didn’t want the bottle, drank it later) Like you said I don’t know if it is a fluke but he drank a TON more today than usual!!) how much did you give JAxon? the probiotics I mean, the ones I got said 1/4 tsp a day (baby jarodopholus) I also got some for me and my older son! I figured heck why not?? Aidansmom792006-4-25 22:28:42

Inactiveyaay jill! Lets’s hope that his increased appetite sticks around! I gave Jaxon 1/2 tsp (Udo’s choice Infant Blend) into his bottle. He still seems hungrier than usual (which is usually never) as of late, so lets hope that keeps up! I had hoped that he would settle down and eat over at his auntie’s house, but he still can’t seem to eat anywhere but home. It’s so wierd, He loves being there, but just can’t seem to settle down enough to eat much. It has always been that way. Does Aidan do this or is he more apt to eat if he’s distracted. I only ask since my oldest son was exactly the same way. (He wouldn’t eat anything that day if we had to alter our home routine . He would go on strike even if we went to the mall to walk around
Lots of night feeds for that one) Im thinking of trying some probiotics for myself too. Have you noticed any difference since being on them?

InactiveI am lucky in that Aidan will eat anywhere if he’s hungry! He kind of has to, my 6 year old has so much stuff I have to drag Aidan to, he has kind of learned to adapt, if we’re at a place that’s REALLy stimulating (we went to a fair a while back) then yeah, he kind of forgets to eat, I think he is just to into what’s around him to rememebr he’s hungry, but he’ll eat in the grocery store, at my older son’s t-ball games, etc. I am thinking of buying a diff brand of probiotics, the one I have contains dairy, soy and fish (?) and Aidan’s on lacto-free formula, not b/c I think he’s lactose intolerant really, just b/c it’s easier for him to digest, he’s only had 2 doses of it though so I am going to give it a week or so..I have only taken them once and given them to my 6 year old once..He was really constipated earlier today. but I’m thinking it was the avacado, not the probiotics?

I wouldn’t think it’s the avocado bcse they are so full of oil…but I have no idea…

InactiveI agree with Laura about the avocado, but what do i know! I couldn’t get any of my kids to eat them despite all my best efforts…. There is only 1 brand of probiotics suitable for infants available here so i’m stuck with it for now. I imagine that they would special order something for me though. I was concerned as well that mine contained lactobacillius (sp?) since Jaxon is on soy formula (for now-or until he reacts to this one too
), but figured that i’d give it some time. He did really well again tonight with his bottle – 5 1/2 oz and that’s with a 3 oz bottle at supper and a bit of peas and couple of tastes of pears. That’s practically unheard of!
keep us posted as to how it goes!Have you heard anything beneficial or otherwise about digestive enzymes? am just curious

InactiveDo you ladies check with your Ped before giving Probiotics? I’m wondering why the heck both my Ped as well as Ped GI (2 of them) are AGAINST giving Probiotics to my dd…I raise the matter everytime I meet GI and this time too he dismissed the idea…
I have heard great things about digestive enzymes too…but thought its just not worth asking my docs about them..surely, they will disagree

InactiveHi Sangeetha, no (
) i haden’t checked with my pediatrition before giving Jaxon probiotics- mostly since i haven’t been able to see one yet! However i will mention once i get in (the effects etc). i researched probiotics( online) until i felt comfortable with taking the leap though. I never would have thought of it if i haden’t heard of it here (reflux forum).
am still interested in digestive enzymes and any info on them though!

InactiveLOL I have this habit of doing things my peditrician hates, switching Aidans formula wihtout calling, he eating only 7 oz a day on similac advance ,and was miserable, my dr kept saying keep him on it, I decided to switch to the lactose free similac, and he went up to 16-20 oz a day…….I do indeed give aidan probiotics ( well, did I need to find a dairy free brand and the one I have contains dairy) I didn’t even mention it to her b/c well although she’s his dr, I get the ultimate say…,

InactiveThe only negative thing I’ve had happen with probiotics is loose stools.
We never had any negative side effects from aloe vera. My chiropractor suggested giving it to Lucas at age 11 mos and he took it for several months.
On the positive side with probiotics, we had SEVERE sleeping problems for 18 mos, and now my son is beginning to sleep for periods of time and it’s due to probiotics, a dietary change my chiropractor suggested (the ped nad ped gi NEVER suggested this change) and adjustments with the chiropractor. Our docs were content to hear me say every six weeks for 18 months that things were still horrible. Sometimes you have to go against the docs suggestions, or read what you can, get the scoop here from toher moms who have BEEN in the trenches with their little ones….rather than the docs. Western medicine certainly has it’s benefits, and we’re all (most of us on this forum) benefitting from medications and testing, etc., but at some points, western medicine can no longer help you, and we reached this point, and this site has saved us. So….by all means consider what your docs say….but then see what these mothers say too, and if your baby still isn’t better, investigate other alternatives.
