InactiveOk. I bought an avacado at the store, mashed it up and thinned it to babyfood texture using water…BUT does anyone know if its ok to give a almost 5 month old avacado? Also, I tried to mash up a banana and thinned it using formula..but no matter how thin I made it ti’s still lumpy (no, no babyfood grinder or blender)….is it ok to try to feed it to him with a bit of a texture?

InactiveIt really just depends on the baby. Isaac was eating really lumpy chunky stuff by 6 months old but some babies don’t until they are a year old.

InactiveI was thinking of trying avacado with Myles. (He’s 7 months old). I was going to post a question to Laura about how to prepare it. (I’ve actually never eaten an avacado!).
You just mash it up? It’s soft enough?
As for texture, if he’ll take it, I’d say give it to him. From my experience with babies, the younger they are willing to accept textured foods, the better. If you wait too long they sometimes won’t take any textured foods from a spoon. My girls would never eat any textured foods and went right from pureed baby foods to finger foods. Now they still don’t like anything lumpy!

InactiveWell, yeah I just mashed it up and added water until I thought it looked like baby food thickness, I thought about using formula like the bananas I made but frankly the thought of avacado and milk made me want to puke-lol, fed it to him for lunch today with his first dose of probiotics and he LOVED it. Probably had little taste b/c of all the water..and I don’t think I’ll give it often (high fat content, good for a lot of babies on here, but not mine he’s huge-lol), but it was nice to give him something other than the usuall boring baby food veggies (I’ve never eaten one either, except in guacomole, I think they just look disgusting-lol)

InactiveThanks. I’ll try it. I’m just looking for other things to feed him, like you are with Aidan. He’s had squash, carrots and sweet potatoes (likes them all). I haven’t tried any greens yet. Are peas too gassy? Have you tried them yet? What else is there? I’d like to try spinach but can only find it in combination jars with other foods. Don’t know if he’s ready for that yet.
I’m not experienced at all with making my own baby food, but I might start trying. I can’t imagine how you’d make pureed spinach!
My girls eat carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes, but that’s it for veggies. Oh, and bell peppers. I want to try to expose Myles to more foods so maybe he (and eventually they) will broaden their horizons when it comes to foods.

InactiveBoth peas and green beans made him a gassy, green beans more so than the peas, but I think their systems just have to get used to them. LOL my 6 year old eats corn for veggies thats it and we have negotiated that pickles are veggies b/c they were once cucumbers!!! Aidan has had carrots, green beans, peas, bananas, pears and the avacado I have some squash and sweet potatos but haven’t given him those yet…he had peas yesterday with much less gas than the first time, the second time he ate the green beans he was better 2.

Keymasteravocado: ripe it’s soft, so I just mashed it up and I did thin it w/ formula at first…you can also mix it in w/ some cereal to make it thicker- it all sounds gross but they don’t know, lol…texture depends on the baby…when it turns brown after being out it’s still ok- it’s just oxidation like banana or apple turning brown…
I’m not sure how you’d do spinach- jonah is not mspi so he loved (ok, still does!) the jarred gerber creamed spinach…actually for older babies/toddlers for a finger food are Spinach Munchies- they don’t have milk but they do have soy- I buy them in the frozen section of whole foods- jonah still eats them…
I tried all kinds of squash for jonah- I steamed it and mashed it and I also tried baking it…also blackstrap molasses is very high in calcium and iron and it’s good to try to put on sweet potatoes and also the squash- probably apple, too- again get creative, as the babies don’t know

InactiveThanks Laura. I’m going to try to find those spinach munchies. Do you know the brand name? I have a little health food store here that may be able to order them if I know the brand name.
Jill, I’ve been scared to try peas, but I think I’ll try tomorrow. So far he’s done fine with everything so I guess I should just go for it. He hates bananas, though! What baby hates bananas???? My girls loved them!! Myles gags and throws them up like they are the most disgusting thing he’s ever tasted. Go figure!

KeymasterSpinach Munchees by Health is Wealth
they make a whole bunch of different kinds- broccoli, etc
they’re whole wheat and soy and spinach…

Inactivethose spinach munchies are so good!!!( I love spinach and buy them all the time, I think I buy amy’s spinach munchees though, don’t know the ingredients on those), and yeah he only gets a tiny amount of the green veggies and I usually give them to him pretty early in the day, around lunchtime so if there IS a gas issue it is usually resolved by bedtime, or at least better by then. (lol taste the bananas they actually ARE pretty nasty, that’s why I d ecided to make my own..although they are still pretty chunky they taste LOADS better than the canned stuff)

InactiveYeah, I was gonna give Myles his first go at peas in the morning (peas is the morning??!!) for that reason. If he gets gassy, it will likely resolve by bedtime. I always give him veggies at his first feeding of solids in the am anyway. I figure he’s more hungry in the morning so give him the veggies then. I did that with my girls, too. Ellie still eats oatmeal with a jar of sweet potatoes or carrots every morning, and she’s 2 1/2. People think I’m weird, but hey, she’s getting a healthy breakfast and she still likes it.
Maybe I’ll make my own bananas. I can probably handle that! He sure hates the jarred ones.
Thanks, Laura for the “Health is Wealth” name. I hope I can get them here. I live in a pretty small town.

InactiveChristine – Miles isn’t the only one. Marisa HATES bananas – jarred,
fresh – doesn’t matter. She will literally shudder/shiver and clamp her
mouth shut. Even if mixed with one of her favorites like blueberries or
peas or anything. We gave up on them for now.April 26, 2006 at 1:20 pm #6883Anonymous
InactiveHi Karen. I never knew a baby who didn’t like bananas, but now I know Myles isn’t the only one! Oh, well. He’s liking most other things, so I shouldn’t complain. I’ll try again when he gets a little older.
Jill, I tired Peas this morning. He promptly threw them up!! He hated them. He has a terrific gag reflex (I think reflux babies generally do) and he can throw up in an instant if something touches his tongue that he doesn’t like.
I guess I’ll have to forget about peas for a while.April 26, 2006 at 1:43 pm #6889Anonymous
Inactiveyeah it’s hard to get green veggies down some babies, my first threw them up 2 and he didn’t even have reflux…Aidan is just a little trash compactor, I think the kid would eat anything if i put it on a baby spoon (which is good, and not so good, he’ll eat anything but some things, like the green veggies, I’ll pay for later with gas attacks!!)
