Hi,

I’m new here so please forgive me if this has been asked a hundred times already.

My daughter was born 7 weeks early and diagnosed with MSPI in the NICU. She started showing signs of reflux shortly after she came home. Her ped started her on .8ml of Zantac twice a day. After 3 weeks on that, it was clear that it was not working for her although we did some improvement.

We started her on 7.5mg of Prevacid six days ago. My poor girl has been in pain since. I don’t think it is her tummy bugging her, just the reflux. I can’t put her down at all and she won’t lay on her back longer the length of the diaper change. 🙁

I know that it takes awhile for the Prevacid to work, but I just read that I was supposed to keep giving her the Zantac?!? I didn’t know that. Should I be giving her the old dose of .8ml or less? She’s only about 8lbs (12 weeks old) so I’m weary of giving too much.

I have so much to say- am flying out the door- PELASE read GROUPIE INTRO and follow link to Prevacid 101

YES both meds- seperate doses by 4 hrs

baby seems worse bcse it’s like baby isn’t on any meds until prevacid ‘kicks in’ PLUS sorry mama dose seems very low

PLEASE please

read all you can, research, and then TELL doctors what your baby needs, as you are best advocate!

Is baby in pain? Medicated? which ones? what dose & form?

Is baby breastfeeding? Formula? which one?

how about poop? normal? mucousy?

painful gas?

rashes? excema?

Please tell more so that we can help you more

Thanks for the reply. 🙂 I read through the groupie intro.

Eloise is on 7.5mg of Prevacid and is 12 weeks old. She weigh about 8lbs. She has two small holes in her heart that we are hoping will close on her own. Perhaps this is why the doc is being conservative with her dosage?

She is breastfed and I’m completely dairy and soy free (have been for 2 months). No rashes, but horrible gas. She is mostly a silent relfuxer although she will spit-up once in awhile. You hear her refluxing and choking though. Her poop is weird–tan colour, and thicker, almost reminds me of formula poo. It is slightly mucosy, but no blood.

I gave her a dose of Zantac last night and recalled why I stopped it in the first place. It gives her the worst stomach cramps and gas. She seemed much better today so I am hoping the Prevacid is finally kicking in. It has been a week since we started it.

Hi

My son is almost 4 months. He is on Zantac 1ml three times a day for reflux. We just followed up with our ped today who has prescribed Prevacid 7.5mg once a day. I remember reading on this forum that I should still give him the Zantac as it takes a bit for the Prevacid to kick in. Sooo, I asked his ped and she said NO! Not sure what to do…scared to stop the Zantac and start the Prevacid if he’s going to freak out. I was thinking of asking another doctor or the pharmacist just to confirm. I have read the posts and see that it says you can, must must wait 4 hours….just wondering why she would say no????

Any suggestions? Comments? Thoughts?

I have no idea. but I learned the HARD WAY.

my poor baby was with out ANY meds until the prevacid kicked in.

it’s safe. ask a pharamcist. don’t ask if it’s safe, just state/ask:

“I have to space the two meds apart, right? 4 hrs should be good, right?”

see what the answer is.

also the doses you mention seem LOW.

please read Prevacid 101. and from there follow links to figure out PROPER zantac & prevacid dosing.

the pharmacist said yes when i dropped off and then said no when i picked up – i guess doesn’t want to be responsible…

i was away yesterday and my husband forgot to give mason his zantac in the morning and at lunch – mason was SO UPSET.

i could not live with that for two weeks, so i will do both.

i give mason 1ml at brekfast, lunch and dinner sooo not sure when to fit the prevacid in??? late at night? or maybe give prevacid at lunch and skip his zantac…hmmm where do i find prevacid 101

okay…i called another pharmacist who suggested to also not give both. he said if the dr okay’d both then maybe for a week. it only takes a week to get to 90% of its full affect.

i gave mason prevacid at 6am and was going to give him ranitidine at 10am, 3pm, 8pm.

my husband is not wanting to do both, so i guess we will learn the hard way.

ps do more ppl love prevacid over ranitidine or visa versa???

We have been to a GI since I started this thread. It is fine to give Prevacid and Zantac on the same day. Our GI prescribed my daughter 15mg of Prevacid and 2ml of Zantac. She takes the Prevacid at 8am and 5pm and the Zantac before bed at 8.
