InactiveChloe is currently on Neocate and taking 3-4 ounces every 3-4 hours. Sometimes (but rarely), she takes the bottles with NO issue. More often than not, however, she eats in small increments and seems to claw at the bottles. She acts hungry the entire time. I wait until she is crying and I know she is hungry before trying to feed her, I have tried switching the bottles and nipple sizes. Feeding her has just become a NIGHTMARE. Then, after she eats, I feel like over half of it comes back up before it is time to feed her again. I have tried splitting her meds and doing half am/half pm, but it didn’t help. Her GI refuses to give a higher dose. She is fine reflux wise until she spits up. Then she is fussy again. I am just at my wits end. Shouldn’t feeding your child be a pleasurable experience? I want to avoid a feeding aversion again, but I feel like we are on our way to how things were before Neocate!

InactiveWhat bottle are you using? My DS can only tolerate vented bottles, otherwise he burps and everything comes up.

InactiveI use both Dr. Browns and Playtex Ventaire. I use the Dr. Browns most of the time at home. I haven’t noticed a difference between the two. I have also gone up a size in nipple, just to see and it didn’t matter.

InactiveI could have written your post…except my son is still on Alimentum. But everything else applies. I feel like the only time he just sits and eats is in the middle of the night.

InactiveSome things that worked for us:
-Noah associated pain with the flavor of his formula. We switched formula like 5 times to get him through his infancy. Neocate has three flavors of formula and then flavor packets so go crazy with that. Also you can do half one flavor half another. You didn’t say how old your daughter was, so i don’t know if she’s old enough to care.
-We also played with textures. Adding rice to his bottles helped a ton, but you have to really ammend your nipples to make it work. I think we added 1 tablespoon per ounce. It really helped his reflux and gave him extra calories. But one day he decided he hated the thickness and we had to quit on it. It was really great for about two months.
-If you look up marci kids, they have dosing that is more than what the doctor prescribes. We found OTC zegerid mixed with some mylanta worked best for us, because you can give it without regard to food. Prevacid can’t be given within 30 minutes of food, which is hard for an infant.
– When things were really bad I fed him when he was sleeping or really sleepy (which was often).
-Try to get her to suck a passy. It seems to help a lot.
Just what worked for us then. We’re still having problems but they are sort of different now that he’s a toddler. Mostly in that you run out of tricks, or at least I don’t know them.

InactiveWith the Alementum post– have you ever tried the ready to fed? My son would completely cry with the powder, he was on tube feedings but he screamed through the whole feeding. We changed to ready to fed and is doing great. We even tried Neocate and went back to the other,, I have asked many people why this is and i have not received any answers. Took me a while to figure it out but he was hospitalized 7 times in 4 months and every time in the hospital he would eat fine- they used ready to fed.. We would come home and it was back to screaming the whole time and not happy hardly at all.. I got some ready to fed and he is doing great on it.. Just a thought..

InactiveThanks for all your help! A lot has happened since this post. Chloe had an endoscopy, colonoscopy, and 24 hour pH probe. The probe showed SEVERE reflux and the colonoscopy showed nodes throughout her colon. Those are typically a sign of a milk protein issue, but she shouldn’t still have those since we have been on an elemental formula for over two months. They ran some more tests, and turns out she has C. Diff. That was confirmed through the nodes (which can be a sign), stool samples, and biopsies of the colon. Everything else (other than the reflux) looked okay. Currently, she is being treated with flagyl for the C.Diff., still on the same dose of prevacid, but the doctor added pepcid as a breakthrough treatment before bed. He didn’t want to mess with her prevacid dosing until we knew what symptoms/issues were coming from the C. Diff and were eliminated after she finished that treatment. She is doing a bit better with her feedings, but has started gagging at EVERYTHING and even for no reason at all. Her reflux seems to be under control and her temperament is improving since starting treatment for the C.Diff. I just don’t like this gagging thing. She gagged for about 10 minutes when I would try to feed her this morning until she finally ate, but was still letting a lot of it come out of her mouth. I know she was hungry, because it was 8am and her last feeding was 10:30 pm. Could this still be a feeding aversion?
