Reglan Questions

Hi,

My 4 month old has been on Reglan exculsively since 2 months old. His 4 month pediatric appointment was just a couple days ago. Since he’d been doing so much better and at this point his weight was beyond the dosage initially prescribed, doc suggested stopping Reglan alltogether. He then suggested switching to Prevacid (due to spitting up issues still) and also introducing solid foods.

Needless to say, I am posting b/c I now have a very upset, sleepless spitter and am back to square one. Doc has now put baby back on Reglan exclusively at correct dose for weight. I am no longer feeding solids (didn’t think it was a great idea for a baby w/ gi issues to begin with) and he is no longer on Prevacid.

I was so hoping I could stop all meds.

1) Anyone have a similar experience and have to re-start a med?
2) Have other docs recommended stopping meds cold-turkey or titrating instead (my older son also had reflux and his specialist titrated him off Reglan)?
3) How will I know if he truly doesn’t need the meds anymore?

P.S. Also breastfeeding exclusively (baby won’t take Nutrimagen like older son) and torturing myself by depriving all dairy, citrus, acidic foods etc.

whoa. you’re one of the few people to ever have anything postitive to say about Reglan. It can have some nasty scary side effects and it’s really for DGE Delayed Gastric Emptying more than for reflux itself.

what I would do is this (I am not a medical professional! I’ve been on this board for just about 8 yrs now and have learned an immense and intense amount about all things reflux…):

get on highest dose by weight of zantac

then get on prevacid. get on the proper form and proper dose.

stay on the two meds for a good two weeks, as it can take this long for you to see any effects of the prevacid.

after two weeks, stop the zantac (doesn’t have to be slowly, but not cold turkey either) to see if prevacid is doing it’s job.

or do reglan & prevacid for two weeks, since you seem to see that reglan is helping.

the prevacid will not stop the spitting. it stops the PAIN.

I really don’t like having baby be on Reglan either although seems that’s what docs around here are prescribing for some reason. I’ve heard about those side effects and have fortunately not experienced them in either of my boys.

I think I read something on here about Prevacid containing lactose. Pretty sure this little guy also has a milk protein allergy like his older brother.

I go back to ped Monday and am asking for referral to a GI specialist.

So bummed things were so good just a week ago and now baby is a wreck!

only the solutabs have lacose and it’s milk sugar, not milk protein, which is what babies are intolerant to. however there are other inactive ingredients in the solutab like aspertame and it’s not uncommon for babies to react to solutabs.

I would read through Prevacid 101…
