InactiveHas anyone used Zegerid OTC with Caracream to treat reflux in infants younger than 6 mos?
My pediatrician won’t prescribe Zegerid for us because he is not familiar with this drug. We read about this on MARCI-kids and would really like to try it.
I have a 3.5 month old silent refluxer who started on Zantac, without much effect. We switched to Prevacid solutabs 15mg 1x/day which worked great for about 2 weeks, then we started having ‘bad days’ again (fussy feedings, refusal to nurse or take a bottle).
My pediatrician suggested to cut the pills in half and give half a pill 2x/day. Well, that was a disaster. Today, I’ve only gotten 10 oz into our baby in 18 hrs and he is crying again with the feeding.
My Dr prescribed generic version of Prilosec for us today in pharmacy-compounded liquid suspension. It tastes HORRIBLE, there is no way I am giving our baby 3ml of that liquid 2x/day.
We are getting pretty desperate and are looking for anyone who might have had success with OTC Zegerid. Or any advice you can offer on how you convinced your pedi to prescribe Zegerid!

Keymasterwe used caracream (now called bufferbabies) with prilosec and prevacid w/ an infant younger than 6 months
zegerid has the drug prilosec, so yes my son had something very close to what you’re asking about younger than 6 months…I TOTALLY believe in marci-kids, refluxsolutions, and Dr. Philips!I do NOT work for them in any way (I sure wish I could!)Personally (and I am NOT a medical professional! I’ve just been on this board for coming up on EIGHT years now & I’ve leared a TON), I would go for OTC until I could get into the Ped GI. Forget the pediatrician.have you read groupie intro? it’s looong, but full of info to help you. refer back to it often

InactiveHi Laura
Thanks for that helpful reply. After much begging, my pediatrician finally let us ‘try’ the Zegerid 40mg packets. So far, the drug seems to be helping, but even with the flavorings, the taste is really bitter, and our baby kept spitting this out and would not take it in a bottle, either.
Based on your experience, was the flavoring of the Caracream with OTC Prilosec good enough that your baby would take it from a dropper/syringe? Or did you mix it in a bottle?
Any tips on how to get this down without a fight would be appreciated!
I went ahead and ordered the Caracream from the MARCI group to give it a try.Best, Sonia
PS – I finally realized that what I thought was the Prevacid solutabs ‘not working’ was really that this drug had totally diminished our baby’s appetite such that he was refusing to eat out of lack of interest. UGh. I had no idea this drug could have an appetite suppressing effect, but have since read that some others on Prevacid solutabs had a similar experience!

KeymasterI think prilosec is more bitter than prevacid is.
Prilosoec is the drug in zegerid, so zegerid might be bitter?my baby took both prilosec and prevacid w/ what was then called caracream. He took it just fine straight from the syringe. when I tasted it (I think I tasted it with the prevacid), it tasted like a yogurt-covered pretzel- it wasn’t bad. my son loved it!I think the caracream we used is now called bufferbabies? it gets confusing…I think caracream Z is caracream used w/ zegerid…and there’s also caracream Max which uses Zegrid with some caracream already in it.I think caracream is now the term for what’s used w/ zegerid, and, ‘bufferbabies’ is the term for what’s used w/ prilosec & prevacid.ANYWAY: research all you can!hellbennt2011-04-28 18:08:53

Inactivehi! caracream max is what u use for prilosec and prevacid. caracream z is what u use with zegrid.
bufferbabies is another form of the caracream from what i understood on refluxsolutions.com.some babies do better with bufferbabies some do better with caracream.Something about the bi carbonate. If u email them they will get back with u pretty quickly.my son loves the caracream.April 29, 2011 at 7:47 am #68290hellbennt
Keymasterif the current caracream is what the ‘original’ caracream was, then my son loved it, too!
