InactiveAGH where to start? My 12 week old has been on zantac for 2 weeks now, 1st week a lower dose, 2nd week highest does, with definite improvemnat, but still having symptoms; arching, refusing breast, not gaining weight and most importantly, in PAIN! I contacted the doctor who siad stop the zantac (which I did not do) and start L reuteri, a probiotic. Although I love alternative medicine, I have no faith it will work based on 2 non compelling studies he emailed me. We have an appt tomorrow and I would love to present him with a plan of what I am going to do and see if I can get him on board. If he doesnt, have any of you gone ahead without MD support? Also, what would you recommend? Prevacid, zegrid or prolosec? Mix with buffer babies? My daughter has little appetite now, I am concerned about it diminishing more… Or will it increase after she starts feeling better. And do I keep her on the zantac till next attempted med kickes in? thoughts? Please help, totaly feel alone in this…
PS also off dairy, out of my mind without milk in my tea, if any of you tried cutting dairy, how long did it take to see results?April 28, 2011 at 5:47 pm #68284hellbennt
Keymasterhi & welcome!
research all you can!yes, there are those who go ahead & medicate on their own, but this is only as recently as everything becoming available OTC.Are you going to a ped GI? I would start there. If ped GI won’t listen/rx how you like, then there are those who have found that a General Practioner is a good doctor to listen, etc.In the meantime,What I might do is this:(and, who am I? I’m ‘just’ a mother who has been on this board for going on 8 years! I am NOT a medical professional! I do not work for marci-kids, refluxsolutions or dr philips, though I wish I did, and I do not work for a drug company. Here’s more about me:I have a LOT to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘
it’s looong but TRULY will help you- read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You’ll find yourself coming back to it!
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853)1) after makihg my way through Groupie Intro, I’d make sure to read through Prevacid 101;scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=12) I would inquire about Zegerid or Bufferbabies or caracream max- this is all explained from the link- PPIs can take up to 14 days for you to see it’s full effects…so stay w/ the zantac when you start a PPI making sure to give it 4 hrs seperate from the PPI3) About being ‘off dairy:’this means you need to read ingredients and stay away from ‘hidden’ dairy, too. Is there a reason you’re trying this? If you think it’s helping then great, but many have found that they want to try the TEDTED Total Elimination DIet (in fact, I did do it!
). Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana*foul-smelling poop*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s softthe TED takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat. (so you should see the results of you being completely milk-protein free after about 2 weeks. however, it might not be milk, it could be soy or other things- that’s why the TED is good)…Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!Look for all posts by Erinntx! (be SURE to read her ‘sticky’ – the link is below)here’s some more light reading for you

InactiveHi and sorry about your LO. Glad u found this board. There’s alot of great info on here. a few weeks ago i was asking my ped for a ppi also. she said no and so i found myself here reading all I could. I chose to start caracream with generic prilosec. i went with gen. prilosec b/c it’s cheaper. So glad I did! My son is feeling much better, not 100% but much better.
My ped gi appointment is still 4 weeks away and i feel confident to go into the appt and advocate for my son; thanks to Laura and this board.
My advice is, call for a ped gi appt. now b/c it takes forever to get in. Learn all you can and do what you think is best for your LO.
The #1 thing I have learned is that it does get better. I hope this helps.April 29, 2011 at 8:42 am #68291Anonymous
InactiveThank you both for the info, wow this is overwhelming, I feel totally consumed by trying to figure out what to do…

Keymasterkeep with the zantac at the highest dose for weight. how much does baby weigh? I can do the calculations for you.
you can also look for mylanta cherry supreme, this variety doesn’t have any aluminum & is safe for babies, even newborns. it’s hard to find but there are store-brand equivalents liek CVS brand and rite-aid brand, etc- make sure to read ingredients to find kind w/o any aluminum. you can give in 1ml doses throughout the day, up to 5ml a day. if you see loose stools, just ‘back off.’you can give the zantac and mylanta together. you must space both, though, 4 hrs from a PPI (if you should get a prescription or decide on the OTC kind).April 29, 2011 at 10:10 pm #68305Anonymous
InactiveFiona weighs 11 pounds 1 ounce. She is getting 2 ml of zantac 2x a day. It will be tricky with the prevacid 3 x a day. I am trying to come up with a schedule to administer them, I came up with 7am previcid 11 zantac 3 prevacid 7 zantac 11 prevacid. That will take me waking her to take it but I think its the most doable, then I will go after 2 weeks to just prevacid. I have seen posted that some people keep prevacid for as needed, is it effective like that? If after she is fully on prevacid would I give zantac now and then? How would that work?

Keymasterpounds to kilos :http://www.sfca.co.uk/match/kilolbs.htm
11lbs 1 oz = 5 kilos
zantac max dose by weight is 10 mgs per kilo5 x 10 = 50that’s 50mgs a day of zantac, divided into two dosesbottle says 15mgs/mlthat means for every 1ml of liquid medicine you give, there’s 15mgs of zantac in itso 50 divided by 15 = 3.3that’s 3.3 mls of zantac, total for the dayyour dr is great! he rounded up w/ the 4mls!you can divide it however you like- if night time is the worst time you can give a higher portion at night, for ex: 2.3 ml at night and 1ml in the amjust an exampleor you can divide evenly, whatever you wantif you can’t fit it all in, do not wake a sleeping baby… -
