I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with Neutropenia and any of the medicines used to treat GERD. Neutropenia is listed as a rare side effect for most of the drugs commonly used to treat GERD (Prilosec, Prevacid, Pepcid, Zantac, etc.). My 9 week old son developed severe Neutropenia from Pepcid and he ended up in the hospital for a week with a UTI/Bladder infection as a result of his compromised immune system. We stopped the Pepcid and his neutrophil count went back to normal fairly quickly. The doctor is now putting him on Prevacid since it is a different class of compound (PPI) and seems fairly confident we won’t have to worry about neutropenia with this drug. However, I have seen posts on this forum of kids getting neutropenia from Prevacid (although I think it was a high dose). I know that each child reacts differently to different drugs and the chances of getting neutropenia from any of them are extremely rare (we just had bad luck with the Pepcid) but I was curious if anyone else had any insight on this.
