InactiveHello all- after 2 months of crying after feeds, my LO was diagnosed with food allergies and Silent Reflux. I am breastfeeding and doing the TED diet, and she is doing very well (currently 3 months old.) The GI dr prescribed Prevacid solutabs for her, and suggested Neocate. I have not used either, but the prescription for Prevacid is ready to be picked up. She has never been on any medication. She does not seem to be in any pain or discomfort when I am on the (strict) TED diet, however, as I experiement with adding foods, she does have periods of fussy behavior and refluxing.
My husband does not really want our baby on medication, especially since her reflux seems to only come on when I eat the foods that are bothering her (which we are trying to determine!). I also read a study about some children with reflux- and some of the babies did not respond to the PPI. They put those babies on Neocate, and their reflux stopped- this makes me believe that the Prevacid won’t really help my baby, since it is allergy-induced, and that the TED diet (or Neocate, if my milk dries up) is all she needs.

Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!

I don’t have too much experience with reflux meds, my second son had reflux but it was easily controlled with Zantac, and then my third son has MFPI and his silent reflux completely cleared up after I removed his allergens from my diet.You said you’re strickly doing TED? What foods are you eating? It may seem odd, but my LO actually cannot tolerate pears, one of the core foods on TED and on the low allergenic list for starting table foods with allergy babies. Not sure what I’m trying to say other than it can be hard to determine allergies sometimes, so if she’s still having trouble on TED after a few weeks maybe evaluate some of the TED foods you’re eating.Good luck and you’re doing a great job!July 9, 2011 at 4:24 pm #68611InactiveI am eating rice, ground turkey, pears, and potatoes (and potato chips cooked in sunflower/safflower oil). And i am frying stuff in olive oil for calories. She does really great on those foods. I tried adding beef but saw some blood in her stool (bright red) twice- however, Laura thinks it could be a fissure. So I tried chicken over the weekend and she’s been extremely fussy. I’m pretty surprised, but determined to keep trying. I feel really sad seeing her in so much pain. I might start her on the Prevacid. It will just be hard to know if it’s the medicine or that diet that is working. I am assuming that she will still show signs of discomfort, even while on the Prevacid, if I eat something that she can’t tolerate?

addresses the PAIN.”I thought that the Prevacid would help her produce less acid, and that would prevent it from splashing up her esophagus, thus causing her less pain. So wouldn’t that be considered stopping silent reflux? Or what other pain does it address?

some babies spit up and there is no pain- they spit up, are uncomfortable for a minute and return to their normal disposition- this is called a ‘happy spitter’ and a ‘laundry problem’PPIs do reduce the acid and thus the pain, so if your baby is in PAIN from the reflux, then yes, medication is needed.You might want to start w/ a H2 blocker- most babies w/ GERD plateau on these meds and then ‘move on’ to a PPI.Since your dh (‘dear’ husband) doesn’t think medication is necessary, I’d say to start the way most of the babies start out and start w/ zantac or axid or tagament or pepcid. If baby is in extreme pain I usually advise to get right to a PPI (still needing a H2 blocker anyway, bcse it takes 2 weeks for the pPI to kick in and while you’re waiting, it’s as if baby isn’t on any meds at all. we learned this the HARD way).As for diet and meds: you will know by poop and gas if what you’re eating is affecting her…also by reflux flare ups. I had my baby on PPI and I could not eat: tomatos or anything w/ tomato sauce, etc. I couldn’t eat eggplant, citrus or tuna, either… -
