Hello –
I posted under the help forum too – but wanted to further my understanding over in this thread. I have a 11.10 lb baby boy who is 7 weeks old. After an upper GI scan he was diagnosed with significant acid reflux (which we obviously already knew based on his symptoms). We are giving him .8 ml of Zantac twice daily and it is not working. He is comfort feeding ALL the time, thrashing, crying, screaming, spitting up large amounts at every feeding, displays symptoms of Sandifer’s, and generally an unhappy little guy. We tried Reglan but that was terrible. It caused him extreme pain and thrashing (I couldn’t even hold him) and gave him explosive
diarrhea.
We stopped Reglan after 5 days but continued Zantac. Now we are starting Prevacid. I believe, after looking at your info on dosage, that he is on too low of a dose. If I am reading the chart right then he should have 1.5 mg per kilogram. He is 5.27 kg so he should be taking 7.9 mg three times a day. Our ped only prescribed 7.5 once a day – which appears to be too low. I’m fine with upping his dose on my own – but I’m unclear on how to space it with the Zantac. If I have to space them 4 hours apart and the prevacid is given three times a day – when do I give Zantac? If I give Prevacid at 8 am, noon, and 5 pm, – can I give Zantac at 9 pm? And then I can only give Zantac once a day??? I’m confused. Any advice on how to administer the two meds together would be really helpful.
Also, I have not explored MSPI. I don’t want to do the elimination diet at the same time as starting Prevacid since I won’t know which one worked. I don’t think he has an allergy or intolerance since he doesn’t have mucus in his poop and no rash, etc. I’m breastfeeding during the day and giving one bottle of Enfamil AR formula at night. Should I start TED now or wait two weeks until Prevacid kicks in?
