InactiveMy 4.5 month old LO has been on BB with prevacid the last 7 weeks and is doing GREAT. Huge change – an new baby! She has, however, had a big decrease in appetite since starting the prevacid. She is gaining – but slowly – has dropped 10% on her weight curve since last checkup. Doc wasn’t terribly worried – but I sorta knew she wasn’t gaining super fast as she wasn’t eating more then 3-3.5 ounces at any time…and sometimes not even that. She seems to eat the best at night time when she is half asleep. The rest of the time she just isn’t very hungry and if she eats will only “snack”.
I was able to get her down to only 1 or 2 doses of prevacid a day (8mg to 15mg a day) vs the 3 doses of 7.5mg I had been giving per marci guidelines with BB. She was doing good – maybe a flare at night which mylanta would take care of…but I was trying to wean her down to see if that would help with the appetite. It didn’t. I decided after talking to David from BB that it might be worth trying omezaprole (prilosec) instead of prevacid to see if that would help with appetite.
Well today was the first day of the BB with omezaprole…I dosed her at 6:45am after breast feeding her. They gave her a bottle at 915am after her nap and she downed the whole 4oz bottle(great and unusual for her to finish it!)…she had a good morning…went down for a another nap around 10:45am. Woke up at 11:30 (she only ever sleeps 45min) and they gave her a bottle…she only drank 1oz…didn’t want anymore….then was hiccuping, and has been sorta grouchy/wiggly…and not happy since. I just got home and put her down for a nap at 1:15pm. She went down easy enough – but was still hiccuping.
Does this mean that the prilsec is not working? I’ll try to breast feed her when she wakes around 2pm and also give a 2nd dose of omezaprole…but I’m starting to think I should have just left things alone with the prevacid.
I guess I didn’t think there would be any reflux problems since it was just switching from one PPI to another? Does it take another 2 weeks to kick in? The dose of omezeprole is lower then prevacid – is that normal (3 dozes of 7mg vs 3 doses of 8.5mg of prevacid)? If over the next 48 hours if she isn’t doing well on the omezaprole should I just switch her back to prevacid? Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

Keymasterthe switch from one to another does not take the two weeks- it should be fairly ‘immediate’ (maybe a day or two at the most?)
what comes to mind to ME is that perhaps there is an issue w/ her stomach emptying? If it was emptying slowly then she might be feeling full from one feeding to another? this is called DGE, Delayed Gastric Emptying.I would TELL dr you want a test for this – if this is the problem, then it has nothing to do w/ the PPI…the test is known as a ‘milk scan’ but I don’t know the proper medical terminology for it- I’m doing a search now for you-ok:“The only tests that test for DGE are Gastric Emptying Scan(GES) or Antro-Duodinal Manometry test. October 15, 2011 at 8:20 pm #69219InactiveWe are doing MUCH better today. She is acting like she did on prevacid – pretty much reflux pain free except for evenings (no matter what she seems to always need a dose of mylanta in the evening).
I haven’t seen any changes though with appetite yet – so perhaps it wasn’t related to the prevacid afterall.
I do wonder about DGE now that you mention it. She is EBF but only poops every few days – and although that isn’t super abnormal for her age now….it was the same as a newborn too (when they tell you they will poop like 5x a day)…the Ped GI told me to give her maalox to help with that…
