InactiveHi there
New mom here, my son Jack was diagnosed with reflux at 5 weeks, he was given Ranitidine, 1ml every 24 hrs, needless to say it didnt do anything for him, after researching on here and reading other peoples posts it seems that the drug is not effective as it was in the form of a compound and its also weight senstive. He is now just over 2 months, hes a sept 11 baby, and he weighs 12lbs 9oz, last night was horrible for him, screaming in pain, and just crying to the point he cried himself to sleep, it was such a horrible sight seeing my son go through that having him look into my eyes with fear and pain and knowing that there was nothing I could do for him to help him, so long story short my husband and I took him into the emerge today and he was given 1ml of Domperidone and 1ml of Omeprazole 5x a day in the form a compound, and of course I read the post on how to make sure the pharmacist makes it correctly……….My question is, because im getting it in the form of a compund do I need to make sure its given on an empty stomach? and can I give the Domperidone at the same time as the Omeprazole?Ideally i would love to get him on Zegrid but we live in Canada and we dont have that here as well as the Omeprazole does not come in powder packsNovember 20, 2011 at 12:16 pm #69408hellbennt
Keymasterit’s not ranitidene that’s not effective because of it being a compound it’s the PRILOSEC & PREVACID that are not effective bcse of it being a compound
the rantidine can be ok but it is very weight sensitive- you need to adjust for every slight weight increase- babies seem to plateau on it and then need to ‘move on’ to a PPI.when switching from a H2 blocker (Zantac, Axid, Pepcid, Tagament)to a PPI it is important to KEEP GIVING THE H2 bolcker!!!! Because if you do not, it is as if your baby isn’t on ANY meds AT ALL. No one told me this and I learned the HARD WAY: my baby shrieked/howled for 24hrs straight and LOST HIS VOICE
!!! It is SAFE to give both meds, just make sure to space them 4 hrs apart. Here is where to check the highest dose by weight: Zantac dosing– my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):I would continue w/ the zantac/rantidine- just make sure you give highest dose for weight and give 4hrs from the PPII don’t know about domperidone- you can do a search- go to upper right-hand corner of this page & click on searchuse keyword domperidone and search all forums and search 6 months and LONGERas for the compound- theoretically it can be given at any time, not timed around meals.check the PPI dose here:and, if you must go the compound route, read here & TELL THE PHARMACIST how to do it:***How to ASK for PPIs to be Compounded (condensed version

Inactivemy son was taken off the ranitidine is on domperidone and the omeprazole, i seen the link regarding the recipe for the compound when the pharmacist phoned me back i gave him the specifics on how i wanted the compound made, he said he would NOT add 16.8% sodium bicarb, and that the 9.9% would be just fine, then i rebutted that i wanted to make sure there was enough buffer to protect the drug and he assertively assured me hes made this drug before and has never had any problems, he is however adding 5mg of the drug per dose, is the 9.9% still enough to protect it, i also stressed NO flavor again he tried to convince me other wise to add it but in the end relunctantly agreed no flavor

KeymasterEveryone is welcome to research and come to their own conclusions. We are talking about babies, afterall! The internet is a huge place; it’s cyberspace…There is so much information available! I don’t think it’s my place to try and defend marci-kids per se. I CAN speak from my own experiences, though. I’ve been on this board eight years and there have been so so many babies helped from Dr Philips from the U of Missouri. He’s a PharmD, not a medical doctor. He’s been at the forefront of dosing of PPIs and infants. When I found this board 8 years ago, I was desperate. There was no marci-kids. There was no reflux solutions. There was Dr Philips and his ‘team’ and a site that sold the products that they developed. The products at that time were chocobase and caracream. Eventually you couldn’t get chocobase anymore and that website was shut down. Then, there was marci-kids and caracream but you had to register to be a part of a study in order to get the caracream. Then the team developed zegerid. Then zegerid was sold to Santarus, a drug company. Once it was sold, again there were difficulties getting caracream, but eventually you could and eventually they even came up w/ caracream for zegerid, called caracreamZ. During this time, when there wasn’t any caracream, it ‘came back’ and was called Bufferbabies. After a while w/ caracreamZ the ‘original’ caracream came back.
These products were sold via the U of Missouri, through their research ‘branch’ called marci-kids. Now everything is gone. My best guess is that there once again has been something sold and then there’s non-compete clauses and other legal things that go on. That’s what happened when zegerid was sold. The U of Missouri/reflux solutions couldn’t sell caracream (thus the bufferbabies) anymore. I am NOT a lawyer, and I don’t know about these things, but my gut tells me that there’s more legal issues going on and NOT about SAFETY or anything like that, but about non-compete clauses, things like that. There was SUCH a demand for caracream & bufferbabies that I would bet that the U of Missouri somehow sold the rights. Dr Philips doesn’t ‘own’ anything- he works for the U of Missouri and they ‘own’ his research…My educated guess (TRULY A GUESS) is that the formulation for caracream/bufferbabies has been sold and so therefore the U of Missouri/marci-kids/reflux solutions can no longer sell it because it’s not ‘theirs’ to sell…December 16, 2011 at 4:15 pm #69569Anonymous
InactiveHi there–
Thank you to everyone on this site. I have been researching on my own like everyone else and am lucky enough that my Ped yesterday gratefully accepted my printout of the suggested dosages and mixing ratios, and adjusted my 11wk old daughters’ prescription. He also gave the nod to our continuing to administer the original Zantac meds while adjusting to the Prilosec.
Unfortunately, our pharmacy cannot get 18.6% bicarb and we could send script to a compounding pharmacy an hour away and pay a much higher cost OR get some advice from you all on alternatives. I’m expecting a call back from my Ped’s office and would like to request a possible change to a solutab? Any thoughts?? Thanks so much!
