InactiveHi everyone. I need help with the new kid on the block. He is experiencing really bad gas. I am nursing him. Following every feed we give mylicon and trying to burp him when he’ll stay awake for us. But he wakes from every nap and in the night drawing his legs up and screaming. The mylicon works at that minute but 20 mins later we are back to drawing the legs up and having a gas fit. I am unsure if this is due to air gulps because he gets so worked up or if the trace milk ingredients or soy or who knows what in my milk is bothering him. It could also be bad latching. I would probably benefit from a LaLeche meeting but the 2 year old is too demanding for me to get to one. Does anyone have a gas remedy to offer to get me through at least a few weeks while I try to get the mil out of my diet? Is this baby being hard to burp a calling card for allergy or reflux? Anyone with an infant who has nursed have any advice to offer? I am sleep deprived and can’t think of this as clearly as I should be able to. Thanks for the help.

InactiveDefinitely gripe water. I like the Baby Bliss brand – and find it much better than Mylicon.

Keymasterhey there!
first thought: bring 2yr old w/ you to LLL mtg

2nd thought: what are stools like? normal mustardy seedy bf baby stools?
or green, loose/watery or green & foamy like shaving cream or stringy/mucousy? if any of these it could be Overactive Letdown (foremilk/hindmilk imbalance) or mspi…
3rd thought: if it is bad latch you do want to get that checked out…
a great breastfeeding resource site:http://www.kellymom.com/
HTH!

InactiveLaura: I know you have nursed a long time…Maybe you can tell me if I am doing something wrong? The stools are yellow and nearly liquid for sure-I nurse one side per feed to get to hindmilk-about 30-40 mins. a session. I am noticing latch problems with the milk squirting out fast in the beginning and gagging the baby. He pulls off and screams and then relatches. Even if I express a little, he still spends that time screaming for me and gulping in air! I seem to remember though that this subsides around 6 weeks when the milk stabilizes? The position is good-tummy to tummy, but his latch hurts on the right side-it produces less than the left side so he bears down on me. I break the latch and re latch but opening his mouth wide is not his fortay… I also noticed during the late night feeds that he is “holding in the burp” like his big brother did. If I sit him sideways and rub his tummy, I can feel a large bubble of air but I can’t get it to come up. Wondering if MSPI issues and reflux are at play again…think I will elim milk for a month and see. Aloe Vera has worked great for older child’s reflux. Wondering about a squirt for the baby before nursing to help bring burps up? I would also like to give probiotics too but even 1/8th tsp is hard to get him to take-that stuff is nasty even with breast milk. Any ideas, suggestions?
Karen: thanks for the rec on the Baby Bliss. I will try it. I have heard not good things about Levsin which is what they give when you need something stronger. Anybody know anything about it?
Five hours last night-who hoo!!! 😉

InactiveMy son has levsin, which I give him on occasion, it seems to work alright, deff. better than the mylicon, but it makes him kind of sleepy.

InactiveCongratulations on baby number two! I hope that everything is doing well. I just wanted to give you links to my favourite breastfeeding resources. They are articles and videos from Dr. Jack Newman, an amazing breastfeeding guru. I found them really helpful. Good luck.

InactiveHi Amanda,
I am breastfeeding my son now 14 months. When he was newborn I had an overactive letdown. I know Laura sent a lot of info but here are a couple of things I did.
1. I would nurse in a reclined position. This did two things, Michael had to work harder and wouldn’t gulp and two the extra milk would pool around my breast so he could take it in at his own pace.
2. I would let him nurse unitl my letdown occured, then I would deatch him (no he didn’t like it much) and let the extra spray into a burp cloth, it would only take a few seconds and then when it stopped spraying on it’s own I would let him latch back on.
These are the two main things that would help with the gulping which caused him to take in too much air and then he couldn’t burp just like yours. For the burping I would give him the Mylicon right after he ate or sometimes before so that it would help the air bubbles out immediately. The only way I could get Michael to burp was to sit him supported on my knee and then bounce him lightly and quickly, almost like vibrating him, with a hand on his back patting lightly and one on his tummy. Worked everytime, but until we found this, we were up all night too! I hope these help a bit. Good luck and I hope your little one feels better soon!

InactiveThe Kellymom website that Laura gave the link for has a forum where you can ask questions and lactation specialists will answer. They are very quick.
Also from that site you can search for leaders in your area. I found e-mail addresses for the LLL leaders in my area and although I couldn’t get to a meeting, I e-mailed them my questions. They also had phone numbers which would have been quicker but e-mail is easier for me at this point. They were very willing to help.
I have a little guy that has had a lot of problems with gas as well and I also wondered whether it was from let down issues or allergies. I guess I’m really not sure but I know that for us the gas problems went away when I figured out what was causing him allergy problems and eliminated them from my diet. He was very difficult to burp as well.
I have heard that aloe vera is not appropriate for young infants but don’t really know who you could ask to be certain. I guess, once again, that Kellymom site has good pages on what is safe to take during breastfeeding and it also includes herbs and natural things. I don’t know whether aloe vera would be there or not.
massaging his little tummy in a clockwise motion is supposed to be helpful as well. I don’t know if this helped us or not but the benefits of infant massage are great so it can’t hurt.

InactiveHi, my dd was so mspi that i couldn’t continue breastfeeding, even after an extensive elimination diet. But go figure… i’m mspi too! I did hire a lactation consultant that came to my home and charged an hourly rate. I did get the insurance co. to reimburse me. She was very helpful. I got her number from the hospital where I delivered.
DD had horrible gas pains and cramping. I would push on her tummy to get the gas out. It bugged her around 20 – 45 mins after eating. The gi doc tested for blood in her stool with a quick swap test in his office and confirmed it. She also had muccousy stools.
Also we did baby massage, following the path of the large intestine. It helped a bunch!

InactiveHoly cow! You guys are invaluable. It was definitely overative letdown and oversupply-can’t believe I went through this with Jameson and never knew it. He wasn’t quite as gassy but still all the other signs were there! Laura, your links are great-I even posted them on the MSPI listserv since others were havign same issues. 😉
I’ll summarize what I learned in case I show up in a Laura link!!!
restrict allergens in diet, chart reactions on reintroduction, get some Levsin and gripe water for when he’s too sleepy to burp, and change position for nursings to uphill, and use same side for 4 hour blocks to get to hindmilk, also no clock watching or limits on nursing times, pulling slightly on breast also allows nipple to shoot milk at rooftop instead of throat, great suggestions on massage and burping too!
Maybe, we will get to sleep again after all…oops! Hope the baby didn’t hear that! Thanks everybody. 😉
