My son is 13 weeks old mspi, exclusively breast fed and has been on Prevacid solutabs since two weeks which made him not sleep so we switched to a compounded Prilosec. We have been on the same compound for 20 days and his gas is getting worse and he is becoming inconsolable. He wakes up in the middle of the night wvery geo hours flayong and kicking his legs and during the day he cries all the time clearly in pains. His reflux was under control on the prevacid solutabs and i am tempte to go back to elivate his gas pains but the no sleep is a catch 22. Do I have other options besides a compound or solutabs? I met with a GI specialist who was NO help as I seemed to know more than she did. Am I imagining that his meds are causing this gas? I have tried grip water and colic calm and neither worked. I want to start something new asap but dont know what! Thank you for your input I feel so defeated.

I feel for you! What is your diet like? My daughter is 16 weeks old and we’ve been battling with stinky/painful gas and horrible reflux since she was 3 weeks old. Just in the past couple weeks she has been stinky gas free but it took a serious elimination diet and her reflux was still brutal. We tried prevacid compounded and within 2 doses she was AWFUL, screamed all day, apparent pain, puking, gassy, etc. She has now been on nexium for a little over 2 weeks and I think it finally kicked in on Monday. Its not as convenient as the compound because you have to wait 30 min to feed and give it on am empty stomach, but I think its finally doing the trick. For us, stinky gas is all diet related, even with her reaction to the prevacid she didn’t get stinky gas, just lots and lots of gas. Until the nexium finally just kicked in, I was seriously considering the otc med route mixed with the new buffer babies or tummy care products…might be the path for you if you can’t get a dr to give you anything else?

Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:

*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop

*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana

*foul-smelling poop

*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas

*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft

the TED (Dr. Sears Total Elimination Diet) takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.

Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!

Also, the compounded solutions are notorious for not being stable beyond 2 weeks. I use the buffer babies product and it works great. If your LO has gas issues, though, you might want to consider Tummy Care Max instead as it’s purported to be more gently on tummies…

Tried everything for our LO’s gas when she was on Prilosec, but this was what helped, https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14653. Seems silly, but it works. There are plenty of other videos on youtube if you search.

We eventually switched to Prevacid Solutabs and everything has been fine since. Remember to give it 7-10 days to take effect.
