InactiveOk, so the twins had their GI appointment yesterday and he upped the prevacid solutabs and axid. But this is what I don’t get. This is how he told me to give it. For Dakota (18lbs 5oz), Dose one (8am)-2.5mls of axid for week one and two, then move to 2.6. Dose two (noon)Take one whole pill prevacid (15mg) and dissolve in 5mls of water and give 2.5mls. Dose three (4pm)-2.5mls of axid (same as above). Dose four (8pm)-Take one whole pill prevacid and dissolve in 5mls of water and give 4mls. For Logan (14lbs 11oz), Dose one (8am)-2.1mls of axid Dose two (noon)-One pill prevacid dissolved in 5mls of water and give 2.5mls. Dose three (4pm)-2.1mls of Axid and Dose four-(8pm)-one pill prevacid dissolved in 5mls of water and give 2.5mls. Ok so this is what I don’t get. The microbeads of the prevacid is the medicine, right? So when I give it to them in a syringe (only way to give to them) they get all the microbeads anyway. So aren’t they technically getting one whole pill at each dose for a total of 30mgs a day? What dose the different water amounts have to do with anything? I am so confused. Please help. And is the amounts of both meds right for their weights? Thank you so much for your help.

Dose four (8pm)-Take one whole pill prevacid and dissolve in 5mls of water and give 4mls. Sounds like you’re giving 3/4 of the solutab??
SO: For Dakota, I’d give the Axid at 2.6 (heck 2.5 is not so far off!!! what does it matter?! *comments are directed at your doctor, not you!)
And, I’d say that for the prevacid it seems like you’re giving 1/2 of a 15mg tab, which is 7.5mgs, plus 3/4 of a 15mg tab, which is 11.25mgs, which is 18.7gmgs of Prevacid per day total…this seems LOW…So this means you have room to go up AND it means you can do it yourself, bcse how in the heck is the dr monitoring this nonsense of how you’re administering it???!!!!!
I’m too tired to go into calculations for Logan (sorry Logan) but I think you get my point? So yes, just give the 30 a day…or just start off w/ your drs wacky ways and then just get to the 30mgs a day on your own if you see it’s needed…

InactiveSorry, but that is a stupid way to administer the solutabs. Any doctor who would suggest that has never dissolved a solutab and doesn’t realize that like you said, all the beads end up in the bottom of the container, get sucked up into the syringe, and administered to the baby; which by the way is probably a good thing because the dose he prescribed is probably too low to begin with! Sorry, I just hate to see so many mom’s struggling with lousy doctor’s orders and prescriptions for too little medicine.

Ideally, (according to my calculations from the marci-kids info) Dakota should be getting at least 10.5 (and up to 12) mg 3 x’s per day. But maybe twice is enough if he is getting Axid, too. Logan should be getting at least 8.2 (and up to 10) mg per dose. My 7 month old boy is 18 lbs and he gets 10 mg 3X’s daily, but no other meds.
**Hopefully Joel will post tommorrow with a more expert opinion than mine!
My doctor told me to divide the tablet, then dissolve it into water. It makes a lot more sense that way.

InactiveBefore he upped it I did use a pill splitter and gave each boy a half of solutab dissolved in 5mls of water…gave the whole thing so each got 7.5mgs. Made more sense that way. But when I told him that when I tried to figure out what he was making do with the new dose…He said that splitting can decrease it’s effectiveness….I don’t know. I am just soooo confused about how the doc figures the darn dose out…to me it just still seems they are still getting the whole tab anyway no matter what the amount of water it is dissolved in.

InactiveI’ve been splitting Myles’ solutabs for months now, and they seem to work perfectly for him. 7.5 mg is still a low dose for them, so giving them the whole thing is probably fine, as long as you can keep getting the rx refilled. If Joel doesn’t see this and post, you can email him. Here’s his email address andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu
How are the boys doing? How are you coping with two refluxers?? It can’t be easy. I’ve had two, but not at the same time!
