InactiveAnyone had significant experience with taking digestive enzymes while breastfeeding? I’m on the TED, no new foods lately. Just began probiotics last week and have seen huge improvements in my son’s diapers. However, I have been taking Kirkman’s completely hypoallergenic digestive enzymes for three days now, and both my son and I have had tough reactions (severe nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, increase in congestion and cold-like symptoms, general discomfort, vomitting). Is this a normal response that will soon go away? Something we should stick out and wait for improvement? Or a sign to discontinue use? I don’t think I can handle many more days like this.

InactiveI tried to google “Kirkman’s enzymes” and can’t find anything on it. Can you give me a link for it?
I have not heard of enzymes doing that but it is possible I suppose. Maybe contact the company and ask them about it. I do know that enzymes will break down undigested protein in the system and can make you feel sick but I didn’t think THAT sick.
Maybe it’s the probiotics making you sick.
Here is something that I found on a forum when searching for probiotic side effects.
In doing some research I have found a lot of information on why probiotics can make you sick. This is something I copied from another forum….
Within a couple days of taking a probiotic called Primadophalis, I was feeling so sick that I had to miss an entire week of classes. I stopped taking the probiotic around the middle of last week and now I am finally feeling better after a variety of strange symptoms ranging from odd aches and pains, to coldness, to chest pains and a lack of appetite. Why did this happen?

Its callede the herx reaction. it is verry common and the only way to overcome it while taking the probiotics is to plow through it untill it stops after a week or two.
The Herxheimer Reaction is a short-term (from days to a few weeks) detoxification reaction in the body. As the body detoxifies, it is not uncommon to experience flu-like symptoms including headache, joint and muscle pain, body aches, sore throat, general malaise, sweating, chills, nausea or other symptoms.
This is a normal — and even healthy — reaction that indicates that parasites, fungus, viruses, bacteria or other pathogens are being effectively killed off. The biggest problem with the Herxheimer reaction is that people stop taking the supplement or medication that is causing the reaction, and thus discontinue the very treatment that is helping to make them better. Although the experience may not make you feel particularly good, the Herxheimer Reaction is actually a sign that healing is taking place.
What Is The Herxheimer Reaction?
The Herxheimer Reaction is an immune system reaction to the toxins (endotoxins) that are released when large amounts of pathogens are being killed off, and the body does not eliminate the toxins quickly enough. Simply stated, it is a reaction that occurs when the body is detoxifying and the released toxins either exacerbate the symptoms being treated or create their own symptoms. The important thing to note is that worsening symptoms do not indicate failure of the treatment in question; in fact, usually just the opposite.

InactiveI contacted Kirkman Labs. She said that reaction is not normal. She suggested I try a smaller dose, and if it still persists, that my body does not likely need any enzymes. She didn’t seem to be very knowledgable on the subject. I have already tried 1/2 the dose with similar reactions. I may still try 1/4, but don’t know if it’s worth it. I just thought I may have better success with new foods with the help of the enzyme.

InactiveOK now I found Kirkman Labs. It looks like they have good products but I don’t understand why they have their enzymes and probiotics split into so many different bottles of pills. They use many of the same enzymes and probiotics that Core Health Products’s uses in their Digestive Health pills (the brand we use). But Digestive Health has all the probiotics and enzymes in one pill in one bottle. Most of the time when someone is lacking in one kind of probiotic or enzymes they are lacking in many.
Have you read my blog? (See signature) I believe you will find some helpful information on there.

InactiveKirkman products are usually very safe for kids/adults with MFPI. That’s why I’ve been using them for awhile. I did read your blog, which gave me some hope in helping my kids overcome their food intolerances and compelled me to start trying the enzymes. I looked into Digestive Health, but the herbs could be a problem for my LO and for my already low milk supply. My other two are sensitive to many herbs.
