InactiveWe have recently confirmed delayed gastric emptying and pylorospasms that have always been suspected for my 5 month old. Currently she is on erythro. for the emptying but while on it she has had this recent test and still has a major delay. I think we are going to be changing to another med. We have tried to start solids on and off since 4 months, but she hasn’t been able to tolerate them. With rice cereal, she had an all out allergic reaction. With oatmeal, about an hour after eating, she becomes really fussy and eventually escalates to hysterics by the days end. We stopped for a while and this week offered her squash per GI’s instruction. She loved it, but had the same reaction as with the oatmeal. With the squash, however, she started spitting it up about 7 hours later and did for the rest of the evening. It was only slightly thinner than when it went in. Is this fussiness common for kids with emptying issues when trying to introduce solids? I am now not planning on feeding her anymore until we get a new med on board for the emptying, but what do I have to look forward too with solids and a delay in emptying? Porr kid wants to eat so badly. She knows exactly what we are doing when we eat infront of her and tries to grab at what we have. Her formula intake is pathetic and we concentrate her cals. I don’t want her to start associatng solids with pain like I think she has her bottles, so I want to wait until we get things straightened out.

InactiveHey, I just answered your other post. We didn’t have issues that bad with the emptying, but… we are just now having success with solids at 8 months. We started using beechnut barley at that age because she couldn’t tolerate the oatmeal either. Also, we only gave a spoonful of each solid we introduced. Fussiness can also be a sign of allergy and excessive spitting up. It’s like the body needs to find a way to get rid of the food. The docs. told us to reintroduce the foods a few months later and so far so good. Still staying away from rice though. Are you using beechnut brand? The others have soy in them. We learned that the hard way. Maybe it would be helpful for you to do a search to see if other moms have had past posts about dge. Good luck!

Keymastermaybe give her time to clear our the squash from her system and then try a frozen organic apple slice for her to gnaw on when she’s begging? when it starts getting crumbly like she could choke on pieces, take it away? or an organic frozen carrot? this also helps with teething

it’s not really ‘starting’ solids, but you don’t ‘need’ to until later anyway- I only mention this so that you can appease her as she’s ‘begging’

InactiveI thought about the apples in a mesh feeder bag. She has had diluted apple juice for past constipation issues when she first started neocate and had no problems with it. She is teething like crazy and already has one popped through. Have you used the feeder bags at all? I think it really would appease her while we are eating in front of her. I have never seen a kid take to solids like she did. My first one had a learning curve with the moving the food back with her tongue and all. She did the usual spitting more than eating. My 5 month old went after it like there was no tomorrow…didn’t miss a drop, and she was so excited. Poor kiddo. I think she is just hungry because she won’t take a bottle to well. Maybe the apple slices in a feeder bag will be just what she needs.

We used beechnut. I have heard a lot of people say to try barely. I think that the fussiness is from not emptying. I mean surely this kid can’t be allergic to everything.

InactiveI was going to suggest the feeder bag, too. My girls loved them. When they were teething I’d freeze fruits in them and they would suck and chew on them while the rest of us ate dinner. They don’t get much food into them, but they get to taste new things and enjoy the teething as well. Liza loved cantaloupe in hers. Ellie loved grapes.

KeymasterI never used the feeder bag- my LC (lactation consultant) had a mother’s group and she’s got a million wacky opinions (which I always took w/ a grain of salt!
) and one wacky opinion was that the bags ‘invited’ bacteria…who knows?!? I just let Jonah gnaw on frozen stuff and got it away if it started to crumble…April 30, 2006 at 1:02 pm #7236Anonymous
InactiveI’ve heard that bacteria thing, too. I think as long as you soak them in hot, soapy water immediately after each use, and boil them from time to time, they are fine.
