InactiveHi there- I’m new to the site. I have a 6 week old baby girl who was not having any issues until about 2 weeks ago. She was on Similac Advance. I tried her on Good Start as my other 2 kids both ended up on Good Start w/ good results (My older one had reflux w/ projectile vomitting for 10 months). The Good Start did Not help my newborn. Our pediatrician dx her with silent reflux as she is not vomitting. She is now on Zantac 3 times a day and we have switched to Enfamil AR, as the dr. thinks she needs a thicker formula. Here are my concerns: 1> food allergies w/ introducing grain starch too early; 2> new research showing evidence of childhhod obesity w/ too early starch intro; 3> constipation; and finally 4> what if this is really a milk protein issue. Should I just go right to nutramengin? Has anyone used Enfamil AR and had good results? Thanks for all the advice. Dee

InactiveI never used the AR (my son has MSPI) but I was under the impression that it was to control spiting. If you son has silent reflux I am not sure it would really help. It might not hurt to try the nutramigen or alimentum for a couple weeks to see if it would help.

InactiveHi Katey- Thanks for responding. You’re right that the AR is used to control spitting; but it also used when a thicker formula is recommended. Kenzie was 9-10 at birth and is now 12-3 at 6 weeks. The ped. thinks that her appetite and gi tract are not in sync, which is why she’s refluxing. She is actually having a good day today and I would say is 75% improved from where she was last Thurs. So far no constipation. Can you tell me how milk or soy protein intolerance are diagnosed and signs to look for? My ped. said that if this deosn’t work the next step would be soy and then nutramengin. Fortunately for me, she is resting very comfortably at night. Since Sunday, she has been sleeping for me (upright in her infant seat in the bassinet) from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Thanks again- Dee

InactiveI’ve only seen maybe one person on this board have luck with the Enfamil AR to control spitting. If you are suspecting a protein intolerance, you are probably right. I would personally just try either Nutramigen or Alimentum and see how she does on one of those. Some of us with spitters chose to thicken formula with a cereal (rice or oatmeal) but others choose not to. I didn’t do it until Hailey was between 3 and 4 months. I think you have valid points regarding introducing grains early and I think it’s worth trying some other options first. Sounds like she’s sleeping pretty good! Enjoy that!

InactiveWe knew Sebastian had MSPI because of sever vomiting and VERY mucusy stools when he was on breast milk. The ped. had us try soy and he got so gassy you could see that his stomach was distended. The only time he was not crying was when he was asleep and that would only last for about a half hour to an hour at a time. Day and night.
After a few weeks on ntramigen his bm’s got more normal and the vomiting stopped. The gas was much better then it was on the soy and he had several happy periods during the day. He was still very fussy and did not sleep well at all. He was difficult to feed (arching pulling away from the bottle) That is when the reflux was diagnosed. sense he did not spit up and he had such classic symptoms of MSPI the dr. did not even suspect reflux at first.
If it looks like the AR is helping and SHE
dose not have symptoms of MSPI you should probably stick with it. The one thing I final came to terms with is that there is not miracle cure that is going to make them all better. A 75% improvement is pretty good. for more info. on MSPI you can click on search on the top of the page and select all forms and type in MSPI. That will get you all posts about it. Also the Infantreflux.org site has some good links on it that you can read. Good Luck

Inactivemy son has been on cereal since 4 weeks old, no problems with it other than rice constipated him so I switched to oatmeal. , I also switched him to lactose free formula since it is easier to digest.Aidansmom792006-5-3 18:28:19

InactiveThe cereal with her was a disaster! It looked like it was helping her improve but then we hit a wall and she became so gassy. I was able to get a GI appt. for 3 weeks from now. We started the soy late this afternoon. I’ve heard that kids who are also soy intolerant will get extremely gassy as well. Does anyone now the name of the test that is done to diagnose MPSI? I know it involves a stool sample, but I don’t know the actual name of the test. Because of the delay in seeing the Gi, I want to see if my pediatrician could do the test.
