Hey all,

I haven’t posted in a long time since Robbie is just about perfect now. He still spits up, but no more pain and no more meds! He is a whopping 20 lbs. 15 oz. and 29.25 inches tall! Big boy!

Anyway, my question does not concern him. I have this sister in law…and my suspicion is that she hates me. She has never said so but she really does not seem to care for me AT ALL! We just don’t click.

She just had a baby (#2) on March 31. Some background — he was supposed to be a twin but the other was vanishing. He was pretty tiny when born, and looked like a preemie. He has been a spitter from the beginning. Every time they lay him flat, barf. Thursday night/ Friday morning, he was rushed to ER because he spit up blood. They gave him Zantac and said it was probably erosions from reflux due to the history of spitting. He eats pretty good, but she has always had to wake him up to feed him and he tends to give up and have to be coaxed at the breast. No Sandifers that I know of.

Now here is the deal…she took him to the ped yesterday and he said it is NOT reflux because he eats and pukes a couple of hours later. To my knowledge, that does not rule out reflux, right? Robbie has always been like that. Two hours after eating he would barf. Still reflux. Also, they can’t lay him flat because he throws up all over the bed. If they hold him upright he won’t puke. But the whole household is insisting that it’s a virus.

So my first instinct is to help and offer my experience with these matters. But she can’t stand me and is just positive that there is no way he can have reflux. Part of her reasoning is that breastfeeding prevents all problems in children. Ladies, all I really want is an opinion about the reflux thing. Do you think it sounds like reflux? How do I tell her to seek a second opinion if it is? Please help me out here.

It sounds like reflux to me. My son is not much of a spitter, but when he dose it has always been a few hours after eating. I would say for the babies sake you should at least try to convince them to seek a second oponion or at least question their ped. more. If she already hates you what is there to lose At least you would feel better knowing you tried.

Would it be easier to go to your brother, or maybe you partents and then they could approach her?

Glad to hear your son is so much better. It gives me hope

Sarah, sounds like reflux to me too. Glad to hear that Robbie is doing so well now. I was just thinking of you guys a few days ago because I tried to give Hailey goat’s milk. She took one sip and pitched the cup across the room at me!

Maybe try talking to your brother about your experience with Robbie. He may see some similarities in his baby and maybe talk to his wife about it. If it’s coming from him instead of you maybe your sister-in-law will wake up and see the writing on the walls.

Poor baby. I hope somebody gets that little guy some help.

Actually, this is my husband’s sister. And miracle of miracles, her husband called me today to ask what we did for Robbie and to describe some behaviors. They are going back to the doc to ask for different meds — he pukes up Zantac just like Robbie did — and I hooked them up with the Dr. Sears elimination diet. We are offering them our old wedge and suggesting things. The biggest help is my MIL — whom I absolutely love, BTW. She is so wonderful! — who calls me on a regular basis and gets advice that she passes on. Thanks all for the opinions. It’s tough to know what to do.

BTW, Lori, Robbie loves his Goat’s Milk in a bottle but if I put it in a cup he throws it across the room too. Isn’t that weird?

Good news! I hope they get good results at the doctor. Hopefully a PPI. I’ll bet that once they accept that their little guy has a problem, they will turn to you more for advice. It’s hard in the beginning to cope with the idea that your baby has an illness which is going to present long term challenges. At least it was for me. Even with my second reflux baby I didn’t really figure it out until he was over 2 months old; even though I had been through it before with my daughter.

I hope it all goes well and the litte guy gets the help he needs. They are lucky to have you to help them in the months to come!

Hey all,

I just wanted to let y’all know that my nephew has had an Upper GI, and they found pyloric stenosis, so he’s having surgery tomorrow. From all I have heard it’s pretty minor surgery, so he should come through all right. Please keep them in your thoughts, though, and thank you for all the great advice.
