InactiveWell, after quite the ordeal–Emily and I took a military space-available flight back to the US so we could get Zegerid, which was prescribed by a family friend while we waited for the ridiculous military system to get her some help–we have the magical medicine. Many, many thanks to Joel for his endlessly patient answering of my questions. God really blessed me by putting him in our path!!
Well, I’m having some trouble getting Emily not to dribble it out. When I put it in with a syringe, she closes her mouth or turns her head and the liquid dribbles out the sides. Ugh.
After all this!!Back when we had to grind up the hard pill (which tasted AWFUL), our best success came with mixing it with a tiny bit of applesauce and sucking it up a syringe. Somehow, the thickness of the applesauce kept it from seeping out the sides of her mouth if we squirted a bit at the very back of her throat.
She’s just getting into some solid foods and not at all skilled at it yet; she still pushes a lot of it back out her mouth. So, the applesauce/cereal idea a lot of you use isn’t a viable option right now.
Here’s the question: I’m concerned about mixing up the proper doses (I’d have to visually divide the day’s doses into three equal parts… good luck, right?) and go through some gyrations to get it mixed properly three times a day. Can I do it in one shot?–that is, mixing the Zegerid packet with the applesauce, storing in the fridge, and giving over the course of the day as you can do with water? Or does Zegerid mixed with anything other than water have to be administered immediately?

Keymasteramy,
hi! um, I’m not sure you can give zegerid with apple sauce? I know you can give it with breastmilk-
are you using a thin syringe and putting it in deep alongside her cheek & slowly squirting it in?
I’ll do a search for you:

From Joel’s posts:
“Yes, you have to mix it with water, but then you can add the dose to his bottle of milk or formula. You definitely CANNOT mix it in juice, as the acidity of the juice will degrade the drug. “
“Yes, it is stable in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. I would recommend mixing and storing it in a large syringe, and then squirt each dose into a small (5 mL) oral dosing syringe. Then it will be easier to give him each dose on the inside of the back of his cheek. Keep a tip cap on the end of the large syringe to prevent leakage.”

We also recommend mixing it at a higher concentration than the package instructions indicate – we recommend a 2 mg/mL concentration. This means that you can give less volume per dose, which is much better for giving to infants. To make this concentration with a 20 mg packet, you add 6.5 mL of tap water to the powder. InactiveHi,
When Haden first started Zeg. I used to make 2 bottles, one with about an ounce of formula and the Zegerid and the other bottle with 5 ounces or whatever the amount he was drinking at that time. I would then first give him the bottle with the 1 oz. and the Zeg. – and he was usually so hungry that he would drink that ounce very easily along with the medicine
Then I would quickly switch the bottles. That way I was sure he was getting all of the medicine. As the weeks went on, we went to a very small syringe and squirted into the back/side cheek of his mouth. Very, very slowly in small squirts. I would usually sing to distract him.
I’m not sure if you can mix the Zegerid with applesauce.
Are you mixing 1 or 2 – 20mg packets? I usually mix 2- 20 mg packets with 13mls of water in a very LARGE syringe. I then fill up 3 small syringes with his doses for the day. It really does become very easy but at first it feels like you are performing a science experiment. My kitchen also looked like a lab!
Unfortunately, Zegerid does not taste very good but hopefully it will work wonders for you baby!
Good Luck! I’m also a teacher.

InactiveHey you two,
thanks for the answers. Joel had told me I could mix it with applesauce if that worked, so that’s why I was wondering how long it would remain stable.
Unfortunately, Emily won’t take bottles or pacifiers.
My life would be much easier if she did… I couldn’t get DH to give her a bottle often enough to prevent her from basically rejecting them altogether. Otherwise I’d just mix it with expressed breast milk. I’ve been mixing it in a large 20ml syringe, and that wasn’t very good for administering it. So I’ve been putting it in 5ml syringes and still trying to get it into the very back of her mouth. It still manages to dribble out when she closes her mouth or makes it “bubble”. She doesn’t do that with applesauce, and I tried it very successfully with applesauce last night. It’s just a royal pain to mix, so it would be much better if I could mix the whole 40mg packet all at once in a large syringe and put it into smaller ones for the day’s doses. Seems to be the smallest risk of losing the medication in transferring from one place to another…
