InactiveI just (finally) have spoken with a doctor about my daughter’s upper GI test from last Monday. (That’s a whole different story.
) He still does not have the official results, but based on what I told him the radiologist discussed with us, he said that he is probably going to prescribe Reglan. The radiologist saw reflux and noted that her stomach was very slow to empty into the small intestines. He saw no structural abnormalities. The doctor is calling to try and find the official “paper” results.I have read numerous “bad” things about Reglan (some good), and I guess I just need some advice from anyone that has used it. My middle child (now 8) was also on Reglan, but that was many years ago and I really knew nothing about the drug then. He was on a small dosage for a short amount of time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Susan

Keymasterreglan is for delayed gastric empting DGE.
ask the doctor if that test was even ordered…
I *think* it’s a specific test to look for DGE & it’s not just from an Upper GI…
Once DGE has been diagnosed (again, I think it’s from a specific test, I might be wrong!) then you can try motility drugs. reglan has been used successfully by some, especially in small doses/dosing. Bethecanol (sp?) is also widely used…
you can do a search

InactiveI haven’t had any experience with this drug, but I talked to Myles doctor about Reglan today. Myles has low motility, possibly dge. He’s never been tested for either but shows the signs. His doctor said that she prefers not to prescribe Reglan even if a baby does test positive for dge unless they are suffering complications such as FTT, or pain, because of the side effects of the drug (which she didn’t mention, but I’ve heard of).
How is Ellie doing?

InactiveWe started out on reglan because of the same test and results. Basically, the gi thought that the motility issue would get better as she aged and so far it really has. She had side effects on reglan like involuntary movements and she just seemed to zone. We switched to something called bethanochol that does the same thing but doesn’t have the same harsh side effects. Many docs. don’t prescribe it because reglan works alot better and is the drug of the momment. My older dd was on bethanochol when she was a baby and is now 15 and an honor student, so def. now long term effects there. Also, we just noticed alot of increased salivation as minor side effect, but same thing with reglan. Some babies do fine on reglan, like your older, it really is on necessary sometimes for such a short period of time to ease their suffering a bit. Good luck with your decision!

InactiveThanks for the replies. I’m still unsure what to do. She will have some horrible periods (food out of her nose and screaming- who wouldn’t) and then some not so bad days. I am definitely going to ask the doctor about alternatives (trying a PPI or other motilitly drug). The problem with that is (as I’ve mentioned before) we get our healthcare through the military and they have their “protocol”. I’ve always suspected that she had motility problems. I just don’t want to do her any harm when I’m trying to help her.
