InactiveIan’s always eaten better in a bouncy seat or stroller (must be the angle). Well since eating has dipped with reflux flareup we’ve taken to occasionally using baby einstein. Today he didn’t want to eat anything, so I put on baby bach, waited ten minutes and went to feed him and he ate like a dream 8oz(Bottles not solids. Solids he likes fine)! My question is this-although he’s been coughing and retching on and off, could this possibly be a clue that it’s not that much pain he’s in if he’s able to eat when distracted? Or does it mean he’s so into his program, he doesn’t realize he’s eating and afterwards it hurts(had some grunting-but have whether he’s in front of tv or not)-maybe I’m just putting a bandaid on the situation.
Just curious. Also, is it bad I”m doing this?? I only use in dire situations for hydration (he has endoscopy on Tues).

InactiveMaybe it just calms him down? The music on those along with the toys are pretty boring (or “calming” to a baby-lol). It could just be that he needs the distraction to take his mind of the fact that he doesn’t like the bottle? Maybe he is used to watching it, and by it being familiar to him it also helps him relax enough to eat? and no, I don’t think it’s bad at all, if they are not eating, then anything that works to help them eat is a good thing!!!

InactiveI don’t know the reason, but I say do whatever works. Our feeding therapist has actually advised us to use distraction when feeding! We were told to feed 2 meals a day in front of the TV.

InactiveWhen Myles was at his worst with refusing to eat I used to bundle him up, take him outside (with his sisters), put him in his stroller, and feed him outside. It’s 40 degrees outside, and I’m feeding my baby outdoors in his stroller! He’s so bundled up only his mouth, nose and eyes are visible! It worked because he was distracted. So….no, I definitely don’t think it’s a bad idea to use Baby Einstein to distract Ian while he eats. I’ve tried it myself, but Myles would have nothing to do with it!
I think distraction helps them ignore their pain, or at least not be as aware of it as they would be otherwise.
Good luck with his endoscopy on Tuesday. I hope it goes well and gives you some answers. I will be thinking of and praying for Ian.

InactiveThanks everyone-I agree whatever works right? My only worry is when he has to feed himself am I starting bad habits. But desperation took over.
Lori-as for feeding therapy- did they say why it works? Still just trying to figure out if it means maybe he’s actually not in a ton of pain? I mean, tv can only distract so much?

InactiveDefinitely do whatever works and worry about breaking bad habits later. First and foremost is to get these little ones to eat. We use Baby Einstein and put Noah in a bouncy and feed him his solids. It distracts him enough that I can usually get a 4 oz jar into him.

InactiveTyler has always had his bottle in front of the television. When he had feeding issues, it helped as a distraction, and now he just eats better in front of it. He doesnt eat solids in front of it, so I figure that once he has finished having bottles then he wont watch it to eat. I say do whatever works.

InactiveThanks Lisa and Amber!
Amber-maybe that’s the difference of why Tyler’s better with Elecare than Ian has been? I feel like I”ve unlocked a secret door! Does he resist if not in front of tv? Does he take breaks?

InactiveHe will pretty much eat anywhere now but always better in front of the TV. If I feed him anywhere else he gets distracted and never finishes the bottle. We have cable and they repeat the same shows throughout the day so I can end up watching the same episode of blues clues 3 times in one day!

InactiveTracy,
Our feeding therapist that feeding in front of the TV provides distraction, but also more of a relaxing environment so it’s not all focussed on the seriousness of eating. Doesn’t work for all kids, but I think helps some. It never did anything for Hailey in terms of bottle feeding, and sometimes helps with solids, though not much. Glad it’s helping Ian.

InactiveJust wondering if any of you have had success breaking the TV/bottle
habit? Marisa isn’t in reflux pain – just significant teething
discomfort. She only drinks about 16-18 ounces/day (which is fine with
her Ped) but almost all of it is in front of Sesame Street. And she has
to be sitting on the floor but I have to hold the bottle. Which makes
it tough when out of course. She will sometimes drink in her stroller
if outside too. Her solids are not in front of TV but would like to
slowly wean her off the TV/drinking association if possible – don’t
want her straw cups in front of there eventually – or at least not all
the time.June 26, 2006 at 4:57 pm #10576Anonymous
InactiveBrodie at 2 years old still has to have his bottle of milk in front of Baby Einstein or Elmo! It stinks, but it has become a habit. He sits in between my legs and I hold his bottle and he drinks it right down. It is a frustrating habit, but I don’t know what to do! Sorry I don’t have any good news!!!

InactiveWe also weren’t able to kick the in front of TV habit until we weaned Hailey from the bottle. It stinks but at least something worked!
Robin ~ Hey girl! I’ve missed you! Hope all is well! Happy Belated Birthday to Brodie!

InactiveSo Stacey – does that mean that you WERE able to get rid of the TV habit when you switched to cups? How?

InactiveSorry to hijack, but Stacey please email me when you have time. I don’t have your new email anymore. I miss you too and we need to catch up! Can’t believe Brodie is 2 and soon Hailey will be also!!!!!!
