How bad does the diaper rash get? Just when you think it can’t be any worse, it gets worse!

I posted this here because I’m thinking this issue has something to due with the intolerances and my sons excretions being to harsh on his skin because of it? Good theory?

Why do I think this?– Well, I don’t think it’s normal for us to have to use ointment every single time we change the diaper. If we skip just one time, my son breaks out in a horrible burning diaper rash. Just one time! Or at least some sort of rash. Well then tonight, it got so bad that he was screaming in pain. I couldn’t even touch it. It was like I was pouring acid on his bottom. I never saw him scream like this. It was horrifying for both of us! Now, mind you, this is with normal, regular diaper changes and ointment every time. What was it this time? Why did this happen? He did have a BM. Could it have been something in the BM that burned him like this? I can’t figure out what it would’ve been that he reacted to so badly. And sooo fast. This is all why I’m thinking a food intolerance.

What do you all think? And is this typical for anyone else? It’s just one thing after another. I can hardly take it anymore

My daughter used to be like that. When she had a BM you had to change her diaper within a couple of minutes or it would burn her bottom. She never had any allergies or intolerances.

When we trialled soy formula on my son he had a bm after every bottle and it burned his bottom really bad. So I would say that if it is something that has just started happening that it could be food related, but if it has always been like that, then he could just have acidic bm’s that burn his already sensitive skin. We used to use the thickest diaper rash cream after every change, not sure if you have it in the US, it is called Desitin – works really well.

bordeaux butt paste (seriously that IS the name) the stuff works great, and my first, like yours always had horrible horrible diaper rash, but it went away after he was about 5ish months old.He never had any allergies/intolerances, but I’d bring it up to your dr to make sure.

My FAV diaper cream is Pinxav (www.pinxav.com) – it even has
Mylanta-like ingredient to help heal acidic problems down there. I use
it every night and only during the day if there is any problem and
swear by it.

Also, DD used to have a burned looking red ring around her anus – she
came home from the hospital with it and it didn’t go away until we got
her on Alimentum. So in her case it definitely seemed related to her
milk intolerance.

How long have you had him on this restricted diet? If only a few days it may be all the milk/soy proteins leaving his body…

Thanks for all the tips girls. It really freaked me out when this happened. It had never been this bad before.

We are getting some test results back on some food intolerances to know how well I’m doing with his diet. Until those come back, I’ll just hang in there. The tests are from Texas-we’re in Ohio- so when they come back I’ll forward them to my sons gi doc and tell him about this “poop” insident. You know, with all the reflux meds he’s on, it seems strange for his BM to be that acidic. That’s what it was like though. It was like it just burned through his skin like acid or a chemical burn.

I just was curious as to weather this happens to other kids, ‘cuz I thought it was horrible. For me as well as for him.

there was a mom who used to post here, Tracy & her son Eli had extreme intolerances- he had to be on a neocate only diet otherwise he would have horrible diarrhea and rashes on his bottom…

so yes it definitely could be diet related- what does henry eat?

(maybe put his meds & formula, etc in your signature? it’s so hard to keep track of these babies)

Thanks Laura. I did change my signature. Great idea.

Henry never did well on Neocate. He never really settled into any formula well. I couldn’t wait to get him off formula. Then when we switched to milk, all heck broke loose. That’s when I started really playing with his diet. So, I’ve tried eliminating dairy/soy and gluten. I’m not being really strict with it since I’m so new at it. I’m still learning what is what. And, when the test results come back, I’ll know for sure what to take out. He just drinks water with a very little bit of white grape juice. That’s the only thing he drinks. So, I make his food. He eats cooked veggies- all sorts- some non-acidic fruits, eggs, potatoes, rice, gluten/soy/dairy free cereal as a snack dry, plain rice cakes, chicken, turkey, beef, gluten free pancakes made with rice milk, gluten/soy/dairy free cookies. Other than that, if we do something I’m not sure about, I limit it a lot. Like sausage, bacon, ham. Also some of the seasoning I use I know I probably shouldn’t. It’s just all new for me and I’m still learning.

Well, that’s it in a nutshell. Keep the ideas coming. Love you girls

I’d cut out eggs…

and I’d give a LOT of oil in things- he needs ‘good’ fat…olive oil is good, flax seed oil is good too- needs to be in ‘cold’ foods though…and I’d check out avocado oil at the health foods supermarket- ask them about it-

I hope for your sake & for Henry’s sake the results are accurate…

Hi Amy! Let us know what the tests say when you finally get them back. DD has bad rashes from certain foods. It is so acidic sometimes too! And regular diaper creams only make it burn more so… we put aloe gelly on it. It really cools the burn and since aloe is a healing agent, the nasty rash is usually gone by morning. I was so shocked one time when i opened her diaper and the rash was healed (it was a bad blistery one too!). We like coats aloe, you can order it on line, i’m sure any would work though. Hope he feels better soon!

Isaac has had a diaper rash all of the time since he was a few weeks old. The ped said that some children have really sensitive skin and they will have a diaper rash until they are potty trained. We use johnson and johnsons baby rash ointment. It has lanolin for pain with the rash and that seems to help along with naked baby time everyday!

OK, so it happened again.

It’s for sure something different in his BM. And the food comes out pretty undigested.—I know— EWWW! Makes me want to get sick!

Anyway, whatever is happening, when it’s undigested like that, it burns his skin like a chemical burn. Just in no time flat too. You just can’t get to it fast enough! It just shouldn’t do that much damage in 10 minutes! It burns his bottom like pure acid. His scream from the pain is very different from any other times he cries. It’s heart wrenching.

So, why is it happening and how do we prevent it??? This happens despite any creams we have on his skin. Whatever is in his BM, it eats right through any creams we put on. I know, weird. vaseline as well. This time, he had Desitin on and it ate through it and got to his skin. just amazing. I’m gonna need a biohazard truck for these diapers

No tomatoes. You would think it would be something like that though.

Actually, we didn’t change his diet at all yesterday. his same old boring food.

unfortuantately it can take a while for proteins to build up. A food diary might really help you…any chance some of your staple food was another brand that might have hidden dairy or soy? hmm…
