InactivePREVACID 101 IS LAST POST ON THIS PAGE, IN PURPLE- SCROLL DOWN…hey yall,I finally got Megans prevacid 15mg. But the thing is I dont know how much to give her. The pharmacist didnt put it on the packet. do I just give her one packet a day? Also I am not sure how to give it to her. It says to only mix with water. the doc said to sprinkle it in food but megan will only eat 2 bites at a time. what do I do?

InactiveIf you got 15mg packets then her dose is PROBABLY 15 mgs a day, you
will need to call the doctor to confirm that……you can give it as one
whole dose or split into 2 one in the am and one in the pm. As far as
mixing with food…..if 2 bites is all she will eat then put it in 2 bites of
food…..otherwise you could try a medicine binkie with the nipple hole
enlarged to allow the beads to flow through. Good luck and I hope this
helps!!

InactiveI just gave Megan her first dose of prevacid. I actually wasted the first dose trying to figure out how to mix it lol oh well. I gave her the whole 15mg packet. I mixed it with water but I had to add way more than 2 tbs to get her to take it. Im sure you all remember Megans little texture issue. She took it great but it seemed like I was giving her alot. I had to do like 4 dropperfulls of it. And by the way what do you do about the 5 or 6 beads left in the dropper? I couldnt get them out. I think Im going to give her the full 15mg at once just until it really kicks in. I think 2 wks right? Then split it so she can get more relief at night also.

Keymasterangela,
I’d split it all along, as baby’s metabolisms are quite fast…
I also highly recommend caracream, but if the packets work for you, well, use the packets. everyone has success w/ different ways to give the meds…

InactiveHere is a post regarding how I give the packets to Kyver. He does really well with them most of the time.

I got a baby hygiene kit at Wal-Mart, I think it’s made by Safety 1st. It has a really large syringe in it. It usually takes me two times filling it up, but if I tap it on something, all the balls will go down to the tip of the syringe so I don’t have to give him all of the liquid. It has really worked out well for us.
I think that they may even sell the syringe by itself. The opening is so large that the balls don’t get stuck. Oh, also, I put more liquid than is recommended and then the balls are not suspended and they fall to the opening of the syringe. Use a small clear glass bowl or glass to dissolve the packet in, that’s what I do. Then you can see exactly where the balls are and only suck them up in the syringe.
It was a little complicated at first, but after a few times it went much smoother.

Inactivehey again,
Megan is taking her prevacid pretty good i guess. Its still complicated to do but Im doing it. The problem is that she pooped 5 times in 24 hours and screamed all night last night. The insert says it can cause diareah and stomach pain. I think that she doesnt have diareah because of her recent constipation problem but it is getting looser every time. What should I do? She was up and crying since 4 this morning. Im exauhsted!

InactiveOkay guys….I am typing with one hand…he won’t let me put him down…so much for sayong he’s not a fussy baby. I should know better. Anyway, I called my compounding pharmacy and they have never heard of caracream. The other day I found the website, but I still couldn’t figure out what exactly it is or how to describe it to them. Does it make it liquidy or thick? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I don’t have a ton of time to find it again. How is it better than just mixing it with water?
August 9, 2004 at 4:30 pm #100hellbennt
KeymasterMUCH better than mixing w/ water, in my opinion. It’s more than a flavoring- it helps the compound (liquid mixture) remain stable…
if you can get the PPI perscription written out by your dr. as a compound, & if you can find a pharmacy to order chocobase/caracream (it has a Nat’l Drug Code, so a pharmacy can order it to compound your PPI), then your insurance will cover it. I tried this route, didn’t have the patience to see it through & we just order the caracream directly & mix it ourselves (it’s really easy)…

InactiveFrom what I could see on the website, you open some capsules? Cuz ours is in a packet and it already tastes quite good. Do the two flavors go well together? Or am I confused?!

KeymasterPrevacid 101 & Info about PPIs
when from a H2 blocker (Zantac, Axid, Pepcid, Tagament
to a PPI it is important to KEEP GIVING THE H2 blocker!!! Because if you do not, it is as if your baby isn’t on ANY meds AT ALL. No one told me this and I learned the HARD WAY: my baby shrieked/howled for 24hrs straight and LOST HIS VOICE
!!! It is SAFE to give both meds, just make sure to space them 4 hrs apart. Here is where to check the highest dose by weight: Zantac dosing– my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):

Look for Marci Kids PPI Dosing Chart the site is down;
here is complete site, saved:

all forms of Prevacid (read below to learn these) have seemed to be fine with MSPI babies, with the exception of the solutabs (read below). even solutabs, however, have been fine for some mspi babies…
]When I first started here on this reflux journey, I discovered a ‘miracle’ to help get PPIs into my baby. It was called Caracream (there was also Chocobase). The very same people (marci-kids, research based from/coming out of the U of Missouri) developed a product w/ the generic of prilosec, called zegerid (this is now manufactured and sold by another company), & I would DEFINITELY check it out…
*update Feb. 2012:

https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14939https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14939[/URL]
You can now get the former marci-kids products (caracream, etc)- long story short- this is amazing news & they’re now being made & distributed under another name/company– same formulation, whoohoo! They are their own company & not affiliated with marci-kids or the University of Missouri: [The]Product is now available and being distributed by a group that is willing to take on the expense and operations of the following products:Tummy Care ZTummy Care MaxandBelly BuffersYou can purchase these products at:http://www.infant-acid-reflux-solutions.com/contact-us.html”>http://www.infant-acid-reflux-solutions.com/contact-us.html
& learn about them here:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14939]
(ignore this- just to show history of products, in case you’re curious)
*update Nov. 2011- you can no longer get caracream products
* https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14630)ZEGERID has the drug omeprazole (prilosec) in it AND it has buffers, so that it can be given w/ food. Otherwise, you must give a PPI on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. Examples of situations where you have to follow the ’30 minute rule:’ if you use prevacid solutabs or, if you use either prevacid or prilosec capsules (you would open them up and give the beads inside the capsule- you would give on an empty stomach and administer the beads w/ 1/2 tsp of applesauce & then you would follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later
why should you care about zegerid? because you can give the medicine at any time, even with food, and you don’t have to worry about timing it around an empty stomachare there other options?
yes, you can buy over the counter capsules of prevacid or prilosec and administer the beads inside the capsule (instructions about how to do this are further down in this post).you can also buy the products mentioned in this post and https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14939“>read more about them here & you use either prescription prevacid, prilosec or nexium or otc prevacid, prilosec, nexium or zegerid with themany other options
you can try and TELL the pharmacist EXACTLY how to compound (make into a liquid) your prevacid or prilosec. There is information about this very topic further down in this post. However, for various reasons, it can be difficult to get a high enough dose prescribed and, for various reasons, pharmacist insist they’re doing it correctly their way and they don’t take kindly to compounding the way you or your doctor tells them to.

zegerid mixing- using RX packets and OTC:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14587&PN=1Marci Kids PPI dosing chart link to the site:How long before/after eating to administer (for solutabs & capsules!): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2789OK, onto PREVACID 101
(some of this information applies to all PPIs!) there’s Prevacid & Prilosec capsules- both prescription & OTC. W/ the capsules, you can open them up & sprinkle the beads on applesauce. The beads from the capsules can be a pain in the neck (dividing up tiny beads, etc) to deal with. (With Tummy Care Max and Belly Buffers you can get a kit where you break open the capsules & mix them up at home to make a liquid that you can give your baby at any time & not have to time administering it around meals). ‘Plain’ capsules (the beads inside of them) need to be given on an empty stomach (the apple sauce is ok, as you need it to administer it), followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.
OTC (& prescription) capsules w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14642&PID=113339there’s prevacid solutabs (tablets dissolve on the tongue, but many make their own ‘liquid’ out of them by dissolving it in water & then administering it). Many many many (the majority I’d say) have had AMAZING sucess with them! They do, however, contain lactose (this is milk SUGAR not milk PROTEIN), which some (not all!) have found to upset their babies- mainly babies with mspi (milk soy protein intolerance)- & aspertame has upset some babies, too (https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2661&am;pamp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;KW=aspertame
Solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. Here’re some tips on how to administer the solutabs: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3066
You can use the OTC Prevacid (box says 24 hour- it says take one pill every 24 hours and it’s 15 mgs for one capsule) or OTC Prilosec and the prescription Prevacid & Prilosec interchangeably; This means you use ONE or the OTHER, but you can use OTC or prescription. (Prescription box says: Prevacid Delayed Release capsule, 15 mgs per capsule). Some OTC capsules have a little tablet in it along w/ the ‘beads.’ You discard the tablet and administer the beads. You can use capsules of either prevacid or prilosec with both Tummy Care Max and with Belly Buffers. You can also give the beads alone, given w/ apple sauce (give on an empty stomach w/ 1/2 tsp applesauce & follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later).there’s compounded prevacid (& prilosec & nexium & protonix). This is when the pharmacy makes the liquid for you & it does NOT have to be timed around meals. If you go this route, the best thing to do is to get it compounded with soduim bicarbonate and have it UNFLAVORED– you get the flavoring ‘on the side’ and add it yourself per dose, at home. If you decide to have the pharmacy flavor it, it really will NOT be good for more than 2 weeks- you’ll need to ask the doctor to ‘humour’ you and write out the prescription for 2 weeks at a time. Just go for Tummy Care Max, Belly Buffers,Tummy Care Z or a rx for Zegerid!!***How to ASK for PPIs to be Compounded (condensed version

https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14278&KW=bufferbabies+caracreamAmy0013 posted this Bufferbabiesis considered the “gold standard” of the two and is recommended to try first. We were one of the lucky families that saw NO gas issues at all from BB…we started it at 4 weeks old with my LO and are slowly weaning down now at 17 months. We LOVE it! Caracreamdid not come out until months after we had started BB and I didn’t want to ‘rock the boat’ with our happy little girl and try something new. 🙂 Caracream is only for use with zegerid OTC but Caracreammax can be used with other OTC meds. CC is a one bottle system (BB is two) and is slightly cheaper. I really think that either of them are a great option! Good luck in whatever you decide!

there’s also the prevacid packets, which from my understanding are strawberry flavored. they are being phased out, so check with your pharmacist. you use the packets to make a liquid to give your baby. I must report that there are many who found that the flavoring bothered their babies. Of course there are those who were fine with the packets. Just something to be aware of. The ‘beads’ in the packets have the actual medicine. they need to be given on an empty stomach.
