InactiveMy docotor is telling me that they can’t prescribe prevacid for my baby because the pharmacy said they couldn’t give it to children under the age of 1. Is this something new? My older son was on prevacid and it worked wonders. I am about to have a breakdown. Today is worse than ever. I know my baby doesn’t understand me, but I keep telling him that mommy is going to help him feel better and the doctors just keep dragging it out. Why must you have to camp out at the peds. office and yell at them for them to get that your baby is in pain?
My ped. told me to come in today and they will weigh him, talk about other options, and possible testing. I DON’T want to do testing!!!!!!!!! I know he has reflux. I have already been through this. My son was tested and it was pure hell. Not only did he have to deal with reflux, but after the testing horrible constipation. He was bleeding it was horrible.
Please help. Anyone.

InactiveThank you. We just went to the same pharmacy and had them print out my older sons records to show that he had prevacid and he was under a yr. We will see what happens. I will change doctors if I need to. This is already our second ped. The 1st one was even worse.

InactiveYes, a ped Gi is a good idea! What kind of testing did your first son have that caused bleeding? That sounds awful!

InactivePed’s don’t know alot if anything about PPI’s. My ped never even heard of Zegerid, granted it is new but still. There are good Ped GI’s out there that care, I have one. There is a link called “Looking for a GI in your area”
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660&KW =doctors
It is in the active topics now, I just posted Emma’s GI. If it is not on the list make a post and surely you can find one. Then take all the info from
http://www.marci-kids.com that has info about all the PPI’s to show them you know what you are talking about. Good luck!!!btrue2006-6-9 11:9:32

InactiveThank you all so much. I am so glad that I am not alone and I don’t have to just listen to what they are telling me and go with it. I can go in there today and have info to show I know what I am talking about. I only wish I had known about this site with my first son. I hope to be able to help someone else someday.
The testing my older son had was the berium. I’m not sure I spelled that right. Anyway, noone told me it would cause constipation and did it ever. That is how he was bleeding. It tore his bottom as it was coming out. I have never seen anything like it before. After the test, I talked to someone whose husband does the testing and she said the test is worthless. It can show your child has reflux when they don’t or not show they do when they actually do.

InactiveThey should have told you it can cause constipation and instructed you to give him lots of water to help him pass the barium from his bowels. Shame on them for being so incompetent.

I, too wish I had known about this site and PPI drugs when my daughter was suffering from reflux. It’s sad that she suffered and I couldn’t help her because I didn’t know anything could be done for her.
I hope your doctor’s appointment goes well today and he allows you to put Luke on a PPI. Good luck and please let us know.

InactiveGood luck and get to a ped gi ASAP!! You can also print out info from the following site:
http://www.marci-kids.com, or post questions on the Meds forum here to Joel/RefluxSol, and the print his answers nad take THAT to the docs. Sometimes even ped gis (sadly) need some prompting for appropriately healthy doses of ppis for our very sick little gerdlings.

InactiveThank you again to everyone. Just to update you. We went to the peds. office today. She started telling us that usually they don’t like to give meds. to babies unless they are loosing weight. Anyway, she did prescribe prevacid without us having to fight with her. We will be starting the prevacid tomorrow.

InactiveGood luck with it. Hope things get better soon.

InactiveI hope she prescribe the right dose. It needs to be split up given 2x or 3 x a day in order to be effective. DD didn’t start feeling better until we started giving it to her 3x a day. I hope baby feels better soon. We used mylanta cherry supreme and zantac while we were waiting for the ppi to kick in, space 2-4 hours apart. Also, it was tedious but we follow the ppi schedule: give on an emtpy stomach and wait 30 mins. then activate with a full meal. Good luck finding a ped gi, the “find a gi in your area link” is very helpful.
