InactiveWe just got back from long weekend visiting grandparents and Ian slept awfully in his pack and play. He usually sleeps in it fine but we had to lower it to the floor setting because he’s so big now. He kept screaming everytime we laid him down and when he did fall asleep, he’d sure enough wake up a couple of times crying. Otherwise he was great during the day. So question is what can I do to make him more comfortable during travel-portable soothers? Supplimental mattresses that raise it higher (do they exist?)? Another sleeping method? We have so many trips this summer-including one to the beach for a week and I want him to be comfortable and not scared. THANKS for advice.
Also, I promise I haven’t forgotten the eating tips from feeding clinic! It was hard to get to a computer this weekend and got home late last night. Today, I have to work but will find time somewhere to do it. I just want to be as detailed as possible for you all since it really is working great (so far…jinx!). I know Thais sees the same clinic and gave some of the info-but the doctor we see there had some different ideas on it then hers-so whichever way works for your little one, you’ll have to determine. To come soon….

InactiveI wish I had advice but Marisa’s honestly never slept in a pack n play.
When you go to the beach are you staying in a hotel? If so, they may
have cribs you can use. If you usually go to the same place – like
grandparents, can they buy an inexpensive crib? Thanks – look forward to reading the eating tips when you get a chance!

InactiveSarah always hated sleeping in the pack and play. She did it a few times but was never really comfortable. We just started to ask for cribs when we went to hotels, and once we took our crib mattress out and brought it in the car (we have a van) with us and just put that on the floor.

InactiveIsaac hates sleeping in the pack n play too! He spent the night at my sister’s house a few nights ago and he threw a big fit about it. I don’t think that there is much that you can do!

InactiveBummer!! The house at the beach doesn’t have a crib unfortunately. He doesn’t sleep so great in our bed either as he likes to roll alot. I don’t think my parents will buy a crib or the other grandparents just because of the expense and we don’t visit that often to justify it….there has to be a solution…frustrating.
Thanks for putting your head’s together for me. When we go to a hotel, we’ll ask for a crib. It’s just not that often.

InactiveHi Tracy –
We’ve had to use the pack and play a lot for Owen because we have family that’s far away and we travel with him pretty often. He also uses a pack and play at school so we’ve got some great experience with them.
Did you use a sheet on the mattress? We bought a sheet that is padded, and between the mattress and the sheet we bought another pad that goes in between, almost like a mattress pad. It’s quilted and really makes the mattress much more soft and more like a crib mattress. I found it on the babies r us website but right now it’s saying that it’s unavailable: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00009RGUD/qid =1150122714/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-8766914-4124663?v=glance&a mp;s=baby
I bought it in the store – they have a few different choices but this one is the thickest and seems to be the most comfortable.
There are a few other things we do which may or may not help you. The first is that Owen sleeps with lots of stuffed animals so we always bring 3 or 4 to put in with him so he feels more “at home”. We use an air filter at home for white noise so we always bring that with us wherever we go too. And we sometimes put towels or other things hanging over the side on the outside so that he isn’t looking though the mesh when he wakes up – I think that kind of bugs him out a bit and makes him realize he’s not home.
I don’t know if any of that will help, but we’ve managed to make Owen’s sleeping away ALMOST as good as it is when he’s home, which is so important. Good luck!

InactiveThanks Laura and Laura.
I don’t think the floor would work just because he is rolling and does get on all fours in his crib constantly. He’s also pulling himself up like a pro (with one hand no less). Loves to stand in his crib. So although no crawling-we’re close. But wouldn’t be opposed to trying for a nap to see if helps.
Thanks for the tips on mattress padding! I’ll definitely look into it. My mom said the same exact thing. I think bringing his soother will help too. And, I agree about the mesh-I think it totally freaks him out. But he hates being that close to the ground the most. Process of elimination I guess.

InactiveThat’s great that Ian is pulling up – it’s also all Marisa wants to do
lately! That mattress padding does sound like a good idea in terms of
the pack and play issue.June 13, 2006 at 4:56 pm #9694Anonymous
InactiveI had a friend who went to a fabric store and bought a piece of foam. She cut it out to fit the inside of the pack n play and then she covered it with a sheet and a blanket. She said that her daughter liked it much better that way.

InactiveI must have the only kid who LOVES his pack n play. He sleeps in it for his naps and we also have one in our room that he sleeps in at night. I guess since he has never slept in his cozy crib, he doesnt know what he’s missing!
The foam pad is a great idea though!

InactiveWow, Lisa! That’s great! Actually, my cousin’s son would sleep in one too. They travelled a lot and he got used to it, I guess.

Inactiveanother option – for long stays – might be renting a crib…a lot of rental centers in vaction areas carry them…

InactiveSome friends and I just had this same discussion… the consensus was that our kiddos have/had a hard time adjusting to sleeping in a Pac-N-Play beacuse it is an unfamiliar change from the routine. One friend, who is a SAHM, has her son take naps in his Pac-N-Play and even sleep in overnight (at home) starting a few days before they leave for trips/camping/visits to Grandma, etc. Then, when they actually go on the trip, the Pac-N-Play is familiar, just the location is different.
My personal strategy is to replicate Claire’s bedtime “ritual” as closely as possible whenever/wherever we travel… Same order of events, same books, same little blanket, same parting words, etc.
When we are in a hotel room or other situation where we end up sleeping in the same room as her, we do the same thing Laura does- throw blankets over the mesh to limit her view.

InactiveMy son does pretty well in his pack and play. The foam is a fantastic idea!!! Someone needs to come up with a better mattress for them. I can’t believe there isn’t one.
We just usually put a couple baby sized comforters down for him to lie on. It pads it enough for him I guess.
Another thing that seems to help him sleep better is skipping his nap. I’m sure not all kids can do this, but my son is one that can. If he’s got new surrounding with new people to tell his stories to, he’s good to go for hours
Then, when it’s bedtime, he crashes and sleeps like a rock. Wakes up like the energizer bunny with new batteries ready to entertain the world again. We do the sound machine as well, but it seems since he’s been skipping his naps, he doesn’t even need that. Amazing to me.
Good luck and have fun traveling this summer!
