InactiveSo since we’re not having much luck with finger foods other than
cheerios, puffs, graham crackers, bread and limited with chicken
nuggets, was thinking of trying lumpier foods first? My sister highly
recommended pastina – she used to mix with cheese sauce. We can’t do cheese sauce yet (hopefully soon!) so was wondering if it
might mix well with a veggie/fruit puree she likes – maybe apple sweet
potato or something? And then spoon feed I guess?June 14, 2006 at 10:59 am #9729Anonymous
InactiveWhy not try mixing with marjarine or something like that? I don’t know how good it would taste with fruit. Sweet potato would probably taste okay. Neither Sarah nor Hailey ever liked it much but I’ve heard of other babies who loved it.

InactiveThat’s an idea too, thanks Lori. Just thought she might accept it
better with a taste she was used to and likes – hence the sweet potato
though. She also likes peas, carrots, etc.June 14, 2006 at 12:02 pm #9739hellbennt
Keymastercan she eat oatmeal?
I used to make quaker old fashioned oats (I wrote how I made it somewhere here= very speific directions for the microwave, lol!) very very thick so jonah could eat it with his fingers- I put in fruit purees he liked

how about ‘adult’ rice and also barley?
how old is she again? at 9months I introduced beans
– jonah LOVeS beans…hellbennt2006-6-14 12:3:7

InactiveShe can make oatmeal (baby oatmeal – Earth’s Best) – if so can she have
Quaker – is that OK? If it’s wet though again she probably wouldn’t
touch it but I can try. We don’t do rice for constipation reasons but
could try barley. I’d also like to try beans soon – do I just serve
from can? Warm first? Any particular ones better to start with? We are
not trying any new foods until next week (in middle of Enfamil trial)
but I have been dying to try beans.June 14, 2006 at 1:32 pm #9756hellbennt
KeymasterI would think quaker oats are ok? maybe buy organic whole oats if you’re concerned?
as for beans you can warm them a bit or straight from the can- we use organic- you can try kidney, black, chickpea (might want to take the skin off of chickpea)- really any kind…some babies even like lima beans
(buy those frozen)how about frozen fruit? too slimey? like frozen peach slices or something from the health food market?

InactiveFrozen fruit? And then serve frozen/cold or how? Only two front bottom
teeth so far… Will try the beans next week probably, thanks.Does it make any sense to put tiny pieces of regular/whole grain pasta
in her sweet potato puree and spoon feed or is that just confusing?June 14, 2006 at 1:56 pm #9758hellbennt
Keymasterhmm…
frozen fruit helps with teething & also it might be something fun to hold/lick and then it’ll melt and maybe she’ll get used to slimy? hmmm…

InactiveCool! So do you think my local health market will have frozen fruits?
Otherwise Whole Foods? What would be best to try first do you think –
peaches? Pear?June 14, 2006 at 3:15 pm #9765Anonymous
InactiveYou can make a really nutritious sauce for her pastina by pureeing veggies (I use carrots/peas/spinach) and adding the puree to a small amt of jarred or canned tomato sauce. I use this for homemade pizza and any kind of pasta. Has she had tomato or tomato sauce yet? If not it’s something to maybe try later on.
Also, I recently remembered this trick I used with Liza when she was a baby and hated to pick up slimy foods. I started taking a bunch of children’s sized forks, stabbing some bite sized chunks, and lining them up on her tray. It looked silly, six little forks with food attached sitting on her tray, but she did start to pick them up and eat. She was definitely older than Marisa, but maybe it would work with Marisa now or sometime down the road. What gave me the idea was seeing little oerderves (sp?) with little toothpicks. Toothpicks would be dangerous, so I thought I’d try the little forks. I must have 12 or more child size forks in this house!

I guess you could use little pretzel sticks, but she may not have enough teeth for that yet, and when Liza was learning to self-feed I didn’t want to give her more simple carbs with her meals. I was aftaid she’d like the salty pretzel so much she wouldn’t want anything else.

InactiveThanks Christine – we haven’t tried tomato sauce yet but want to try
that soon too! That’s something to keep in mind with the forks – I
think Marisa is too young still as now she just wants to throw the
forks when I’ve tried but maybe soon. This morning she tried to pick up
a fresh blueberry but couldn’t get a good handle on it and then when
she did get a piece in her mouth she spit it out and wouldn’t try again.June 14, 2006 at 3:37 pm #9769Anonymous
InactiveEllie still won’t eat blueberries but Liza just loves them. She loves all berries…if only my other two would eat as well as she does.
Does Marisa have a good pincer grasp? Myles doesn’t yet, so I haven’t been able to offer much as far as finger food with him. He’s had puffed foods, but that’s it so far. He still tends to grab them with his fist and then tries to smash them into his mouth. A few get in, the rest end up everywhere but his mouth. Funny
but very messy.June 14, 2006 at 4:12 pm #9774Anonymous
InactiveA pretty good one – good enough to eat cheerios and puffs pretty
adeptly but not perfect! Will try again with blueberries soon I think
and just keep plugging along. Can’t try the pastina until we try egg
yolk but soon – I think list is to finish Enfamil trial, try cheese and
yogurt, try egg yolks, try beans, try tomato sauce…June 14, 2006 at 5:07 pm #9783Anonymous
InactiveSounds like a good plan. If she can eat cheese it will help alot. I make little grilled cheese sandwiches for the girls and put little pieces of tomato or other cooked veggies inside. I’d cut them into tiny pieces when they were babies and they both loved them. Yogurt is great, too because you can buy the ones with berries or puree your own and mix it in. And you can make all kinds of healthy smoothies.
That’s great that she has a good pincer grasp. I’m waiting for Myles so I can start offering him more finger foods.

KeymasterI’m pretty sure whole foods or a healthfood supermarket would have frozen fruit slices- I see them when I buy frozen blueberries…I think any fruit she likes would work- I’m guessing they’d have peach but not pear (I’m thinking what pie people would use them for?)…
as for tomato sauce I was a chicken! I used carrot baby food for sauce w/ noodles
…once you can use egg yolk you can do a lot- french toast with the yolk, fried yolk, scrambled yolk w/ veggies…
