Zantac will most likely not be as effective as a PPI medicine. I honestly think it’s a GOOD thing your doc didn’t waste your time with it! We tried Zantac for a month before I finally went in and said “OK THIS ISN’T WORKING!” At that time I didn’t even know there were other options. We were then prescribed a compounded PPI. I ran into all the same problems people have mentioned…it just stopped working! I went to the pharmacist and OF COURSE they told me that they compound correctly and it should last a month and all those same things they told you. They were misinformed and obviously wrong! LONG STORY SHORT…we started Sarah on a high dose of Zegerid after 4 long months and within two weeks I had my brand new baby. She has been FANTASTICALLY happy ever since and I WISH more than anything that I knew more about PPI’s when she was younger. I missed out on so much!
We were really close to asking for a Ped. GI referral but had such great success with a combination of zegerid and alimentum formula that it was never really necessary.
I agree with you also…THANK GOODNESS for the internet!! The ladies on this forum have been such a great support to me these last several months and I don’t know what I woud do without them! When you have reflux baby, it’s hard to find friends and family who understand. I felt like I was constantly apologizing because Sarah was “fussy”. They all labeled it as colic and told me it’s “healthy” for babies to cry. HA!
I would also try to continue to breastfeed. There is no reason to stop. Breast milk is very broken down and easier to digest than many formulas on the market. I would definitely suggest trying the elimination diet for several weeks. If you don’t notice any improvement then a PPI med. will probably be all it takes. If you DO notice an improvement, and you feel that you can’t “live” on that diet then there are hypoallergenic formulas available. I know it took a hypoallergenic formula (alimentum) in combination with a good PPI for my lil gal to feel better. It may only take one or the other for your little one.
Well, I’m rambling now but I’m glad you found this forum and good luck!
