Noah just turned 11 months and he is still eating stage 2 purees. I cant get him to pick up and eat finger foods. If I try to put a piece of disolvable food into his mouth, he moves it around, then gags on it and swallows it whole. He doesnt really try to chew. I thought it might be easier for him to try stage 3 foods so I offered him some last night and today. It had the tiniest pieces of carrot in it, and I even mashed it up so it was smooth. He got one bite in his mouth and started blowing raspberries to get it out. I tired again, and this time he gagged, then tried to spit it out. After that, he wouldnt even open his mouth. Last night I gave him mashed up sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar (off my plate). It was so soft and mushy, but he still didnt chew, and gagged and refused any more. I dont know what to do to get this baby to progress to table foods. He’s almost a year old and still eating food that 6 month old babies eat. Does anyone have any ideas?

twins (both with reflux, one with DGE) had the same issue. Finally, at
somewhere between 15-18 months it clicked and they started doing really
well with table food. But before that they only wanted Stage 2. With
them it was just a matter of time – she kept offering different finger
foods – pieces of chicken, fruit, veggies, etc but they usually
wouldn’t take much and she’d end up having to feed them Stage 2 and/or
yogurt. Of course, one did it sooner but the other is catching up.March 7, 2006 at 12:27 pm #3160AnonymousInactiveHi Lisa,
We didn’t even start solids until 11 months and even then Dylan was probably 13 months or so until we were on stage 2 to begin with! Dylan was very slow to pick up on table food, and we thought we were going to be on baby food forever! It wasn’t until about age 2 that we stopped supplimenting foods with the stage 2 foods (stage 3 was never good because of the mixed texture). I know that’s probably not what you want to hear, but I can assure you we do NO baby food now. We have a picky toddler for sure, but he has no problem eating or keeping his weight up.
We just kept offering the table food day after day and throwing it away day after day, and he finally got it. We didn’t start with the healthiest foods, but we needed to get him to eat different textures, so he got most nutrition from rice milk (enriched) and from baby food, and the table food was pretty much junk. But, we got him to eat. Now he is much more balanced (not a ton of fruit or vegetables, but enough) and we suppliment with a vitamin……
Hang in there!
