Infantreflux.org | 18 month checkup and ped taking action!!!

Isaac is 23lbs 2oz and is 32inches long. At this point his ped thinks that it may not be a milk and soy allergy but possibly another allergy to food. Isaac is still up most of the night and gags and coughs alot. He is still throwing up 1-2 times a day. His eczema is now classified as severe. He is also refusing to eat most of the time though we had 3 goods in a row recently where he was eating. The GI dr had wanted us to go straight to prevacid but his ped and I feel like we need to figure out why this is happening. He has referred us to a food allergy clinic ran by children’s hospital and had warned me it would take weeks to get in….I called and they had an opening tomorrow!!!!!!!!!! The only catch is that he has to be off of medicine until after the appt tomorrow so that will be rough on Isaac. Isaac is also supposed to take a daily vitamin now b/c the dr feels like I do that he is not getting enough vitamins each day. We are also supposed to do weekly weight checks which shouldn’t be difficult b/c we will be seeing so many different drs now. For his eczema he wants to see how it is once we get Zyrtec back in his system (our refills ran out and the ped wanted to see Isaac before giving it again) and see if we need to treat the eczema with something stronger than hydrocortisone. Overall I am so glad that they are finally doing something about all of this finally! This has been going on for 18 months now so it really is about time. Please pray that the food allergy clinic will really help Isaac out! I am just so nervous about all of it!
Oh and I was really glad that he hadn’t lost weight but just maintained…the ped is concerned b/c the curve is not right-his weight has dropped off quite a bit something about the pattern.

Sorry to hear Isaac is still having difficulties but good news about getting into the allergy clinic so soon. I hope his day isn’t too bad without meds and I hope they find out what’s bothering him and come up with an excellent treatment plan for him.

As for the Eczema, when Ellie was a baby they were prescrbing Elidel for infants but the FDA set an age limit about a year ago….I don’t remember if the age is 1 or 2, but maybe ask about that. Ellie’s eczema was so severe that our doctor’s jaw literally dropped when I walked into the office with her. Ellie’s face was completely red with absolutely no clear skin except around her eyes and the tip of her nose. It was a horrible site, but the Elidel literally cleared it up in a matter of days. I was told to use Elidel twice a day and Cortaid 1% twice per day (not at the same time) and it was truly amazing how quickly it cleared up. I hope they can prescribe Elidel for Isaac now, or if not, that they have another effective treatment for him.

The ped said that he doesn’t want to put him on elidel until he is at least 2 even though Isaac’s dermatologist said it would be ok….I was just afraid to use elidel

Thanks for replying! I really appreciate the support! We are leaving now for his allergy appt!

Hi Sarah. Glad to hear that you got in to see the allergist so quickly. Good luck, and keep us posted. I really hope that this is the answer for Isaac. We’re in the same boat, and I have an appointment with the GI in January, and he better refer us to an allergist if he knows what’s good for him! Hailey’s weight curve has also flattened out quite a bit, so we’re going to need to address that as well. HUGS.

good luck with the appointment – i hope you figure out what is going no with him. It is hard sometimes… but i am glad that your doctors have realised that there is something off and are helping you at this stage!

What did the allergist say about his eczema?

I can understand being afraid of the Elidel because the FDA did say it can only be given to older children (I guess over 2 according to your ped), but I did use it for Ellie (before the FDA’s new recommendations) when she was only 6 weeks old (YIKES!) and it worked wonders. We only had to use it for a few days to get rid of her really horrible eczema.

Did the allergist have any suggestions?

She said that she has seen worse eczema (she was very condescending and really we didn’t like her at all) which of course is obvious to me. The allergist said that we need to give him a bath everyday (his dermatologist says only 2x a week) and to come back and see her in 3 months……….oh and to continue the hydrocortisone….I really think that I will just discuss what the allergist said with my regular ped and see what he thinks. I know elidel is supposed to be fantastic especially compared to the steroids that they could be using!
