InactiveOk so that is me. I am so tired of trying to figure out this sleep thing. My first son (no GERD) was not a great sleeper and didn’t sleep through the night until he was 9 months old. But he did take two good naps during the day, and woke up/burped/went back to sleep easily in the night. Well my second son, Kyle has had reflux issues since 5 weeks old. And its crazy to think we have been doing this for 6.5 months now and still am clueless as I was at the beginning. Isn’t the second time around supposed to be less stressful on how to do things? Well anyway. First we got his reflux somewhat under control (less arching, burping etc) and then we ran into a whole month of his compounded meds not working, him having a reaction to his 4 month shots, he started teething, etc. He was also having a lot of gas/straining and we were trying to address that as well to see if that was causing his wakings. Well we did the Elecare formula (like Neocate) for three full weeks and after not really seeing a dramatic improvement, I reintroduce the breast. Well his gas/GI issues have gotten much better, even after reintroducing the breastmilk, so I really don’t think it is a MSPI thing. He cut his first two teeth on Valentines day and the following weekend, and we had a brief period of relief from the teething/drooling/whining from that. And now it has been going on for 3 weeks. How long can those darn teeth take and should they be causing him this much problems for sleep. Or has he just gotten used to getting up at night? I keep blaming it on the teeth, but there has to be some relief sometime from them. I give him Motrin and it is hit or miss whether it seems to help. I am just at the point that we have let him cry it out a couple of times since rocking him wasn’t working. And he has slept fairly well after the crying. So now I’m wondering if I should officially do the CIO technique or should I give him some slack because of the teeth?
Anyone have any suggestions.

InactiveI know CIO is for some and not others, but it did work with both of my children once the reflux was under control, and we were all much more rested for it. It took only a few nights (a few miserable nights) of feeling like a horrible parent, but once everyone was sleeping all night, we were all much more rested and my boys were much happier during the day because they were getting the appropriate amount of rest as well….
If the reflux is under control, I would go for it…

InactiveI’m a big believer in sleep training, as long as baby is pain free. I know that can be hard to determine, though. I guess you just have to go with your gut and if you think he’s waking from habit and not pain try some sleep training and see if it improves things.
And no the second time is not always easier.
My first was a dream baby, a perfect angel, so I always thought I must have been doing something right because she was so happy and slept like an angel. Then I had my two reflux babies.
Not easy at all.

InactiveSo now I am wondering. He is still feeding in the middle of the night, and he eats a full meal so I do think he is hungry. So am I just undoing the training when I feed him in the middle of the night? Should I not try to feed him? He doesn’t really eat any solids yet (tonight was the best try yet) and he often gets distracted from breastfeeding during the day as much as I try for him to not be. So I wonder if he does need to eat still once in the night. I don’t know!!! I feel like I have no answers and just more questions!

InactiveHe probably is hungry if he isn’t eating well during the day and not really doing much with the solids. One way to cut that out is to not feed him at night. That will mean some really yucky nights of crying, but boy will he be hungry and ready to eat in the morning. At his age, he should be able to go through the night, I would think as long as he is getting all that he needs throughout the day.
Maybe you could do it gradually… like reduce the amount of time he nurses at night by a minute every few nights until he is just nursing for a minute or two and then just don’t go in there when he cries?
Wish I had more suggestions for you. This sleep thing is such a headache, and no, I wouldn’t say it gets easier with the second. My first was a refluxer too, and she slept SO much better than my son does. I have no idea why. We are doing everything the same, but he just won’t sleep as well.
Best of luck to you.

InactiveWell he is eating some solids now during the day (mostly bananas and some cereal) and so I feel a little more confident about letting him go longer at night. I think we are slowly getting there. He is waking up less crying and when he does cry he cries for shorter periods of time, unless he is hungry I think. So we have gotten to the point that he sometimes makes it to 5 am without eating at which point I go in and feed him. Hopefully as he eats more solids during the day and we continue breastfeeding as much as possible during the day that we can push him past the 5 am thing too. I am looking for 6 am. That is what my first son did for about a year. 8pm to 6am so I would be happy with that for now. Now later after he’s weaned and everything, I would like that to be 7am, but beggers can’t be choosers at this point.
So (knock on wood) he seems to at least be moving in the right direction now and not waking us up 8 times a night. I still worry that he will cry and I will not respond since I’ve forced myself not to get up right away. But on the other hand I don’t sleep when he’s crying so I don’t think that will be a problem.

That’s great. I’m glad to hear he’s sleeping better. My little guy was an early riser for a very long time and I remember hoping and praying that he’d sleep till 5 am, then 6 am, then 7 am. Finally at about 13 months he started to sleep in later and now he’s rarely up before 6:30 and he often will sleep until 6:45 or 7. Myles also needed a 3 or 4 am feeding much longer than my first two did. I remember thinking “when in the world is this boy going to sleep through the night?”
It looks like you’re making progress. I hope it continues.

InactiveI have to say your lucky your first didnt have reflux or issues. Since my son has had all these issues since BIRTH literally I dred the thought of having another one and having to go through this all over again. Though I would love to have another baby, there is no way I have the strength to go through all this over again. Its physically and emotionally exhausting. 7 months and still dealing with it as we brought him home 3 weeks ago..its crazy. So be thankful your first was ok–you may not have had another one 🙂

Inactiveaidensmommy,
I just want to say that I understand your feelings completely! I think our first DID have reflux now that I know what it is, but at the time we didn’t know any better and just thought he had classic colic. Let me tell you, if I had known that this can run in families and that I’d have to go through it again, I don’t think we’d have had another one. I’m so thankful for my children, but I will never go through this again! I am so stressed, sleep deprived, depressed (sometimes), etc. over this reflux! It is the worst feeling in the world not to be able to comfort your own baby. I’m SO thankful that Caden is doing so much better now at 5 months than he was as a newborn. I didn’t think we’d ever make it to this point, but here we are

Now, if I can just get our sleep issues under control, we’ll be on our way!
