InactiveMy daughter is 6 months old and is crawling. My doctor put her on Zantac, but she is still spitting up. Since she is crawling she spits up everywhere. I am getting sick and tired of her making a mess and staining the carpet and couch and her clothes. I am starting today to give feed her less, but more often and I have tried different formulas like the ailumentum, but that didn’t work. I am at my wits on this. I want her to grow up faster. Help me!!!

InactiveWe are 7 months and crawling and have the same problem, I just use resolve on the carpet, keep as much covered with a blanket as possible and change his clothes frequently. Just to let you know 4-7 months seems to be the peak of reflux for most babies due to increased activity, it will get better I just can’t tell you when, I am waiting for that myself. Don’t wish them growing up too fast, these are precious days, spit up covered maybe, but precious none the less.

InactiveFor a spitter, the crawling makes it much worse! My 1st was a huge puker and it was awful when he started crawling. Landen isn’t so bad. Can you invest in one of those oversized playmats or blankets to put down? It could help soak some of it up and you could toss it in the wash? Just an idea. I know they crawl all over once they really get movin’. I usually gate off one playroom at this age.

InactiveI wish I had better advice to offer. As much as I used to hate it when the doc told me to wait for her to outgrow it, f your little one isn’t in pain, it might just be a waiting game. Like someone else said, you’re right in the peak of it right now. The zantac won’t stop the spitting, just help to control the acid. If she’s in pain, you might want to look into a PPI.

InactiveWhat is a PPI and what is Neocate? I have been reading some other listings and keep hearing about this Neocate. I don’t know if it is something that will help out my situation or not.

InactiveIs your little one in pain? Or just a happy-spitter? (pukes but doesn’t care)
If she is in pain, then look into a PPI drug. Try going to http://www.marci-kids.com and checking out the links on PPI drugs. They are drugs that stop acid production and healing erosions. Zantac is just an H2-blocker (acid reducer) and does not heal erosions. It’s also weight-sensitive, so babies tend to outgrow the dose very often. It honestly did nothing for Landen to be on zantac, but every baby is different. He does great on pepcid complete at night and it’s an H2 blocker. We use that in addition to his PPI drug (Nexium)Now as for the Neocate, it is an elemental formula. We use it b/c Landen was so very intolerant to milk protein (he had mucous and blood in his stools even on Alimentum and was quuite miserable with reflux & gas) that we had no other choice but to go to an elemental formula. Elemental formulas are Elecare and Neocate & contain no milk or soy.September 18, 2007 at 3:41 pm #42879Anonymous
InactiveNo, she is not in pain. She spits up and goes on her way. She is taking 2ml and is about 14 lbs. Does that sound normal for her dosage and weight? She doesn’t spit up at night anymore in her sleep, so she has outgrown that. She just spits up during the day.

InactiveKennedy was also on Carafate, but since we started her on solids the doctor said that the solids will do the same as the Carafate does. Carafate is supposed to coat the stomach before eating so it doesn’t irritate her stomach. But the catch is that you are supposed to give it to them on an empty stomach, which is very impossible. Do you know anything about Carafate and if it was a good idea to take her off of it?
Thank you for your help.September 18, 2007 at 4:12 pm #42882Anonymous
InactiveIf she’s not in any pain, then I’d say just to continue with what you’re doing. I know it’s messy, but at least she’s not bothered by it.
About neocate, it’s an elemental formula for children who can’t tolerate soy or milk proteins. If Kennedy eats dairy without problems, you probably don’t have to worry about it. I know this sounds strange, but is her poop normal? Sounds like you have a happy spitter on your hands.September 18, 2007 at 5:39 pm #42883Anonymous
Inactiveif she is not in pain why does she need the zantac to begin with? zantac doesnt stop spitting, it blocks acid so baby wont be in pain. sweetcheeks2007-09-18 17:39:52

InactiveYes, she drinks her milk bottle just fine. That is also what I heard about the Zantac. I heard it was supposed to stop or block the acid in the stomach. She also poops just fine.
The other thing I am wondering is if it is just drinks that bother her because I have eating some baby food and if she just eats that she is just fine, but when she has a bottle or juice she seems to spit up more. So, I don’t know if that means anything or not. What do you ladies think.September 19, 2007 at 11:51 am #42909Anonymous
Inactiveshe spits up liquids because they are thin. that is normal. there is no need to have her medicated.

InactiveOK I thank you all very much for your help.
I know that I just have to live with this a while longer and keep doing what I am doing and she should hopefully grow out of this.September 21, 2007 at 1:59 pm #43047Anonymous
InactiveThe Zantac will not help the spitting up(which is referred to as simply “reflux”), but will help with other acid reflux symptoms, such as pain, clearing the throat, poor sleep. If she’s on the good dose of Zantac and just spitting up without painful acid, (as they say a “happy spitter”) then it sounds like the Zantac is doing its job. My little one was on 30mg of Prevacid and Neocate and still puked with the best of them for a LONG time, but she was happy and not in pain. She gained weight, slept well, and was always smiling. She stopped spitting up as much around 7 months or so, and I’d say by 8 months almost completely stopped. If your little one is happy, then you just need to surrender to the spit up and buy a good carpet cleaner!
