InactiveHi! It’s been a while since I’ve been on. I was incredibly fortunate in that my son made an almost 180 at around 4 months. No more crying with eating, and no more vomiting. Such has been the case up until the last maybe 6 weeks or so.
I’m not sure whether it’s the solids, or what (though he’s been on them since around 5 1/2 months. Whatever the case, he’s suddenly spitting up a lot (though not throwing up), and often cries while eating his solids (not ever his bottle).
Is this just a 9-month thing, or should I consider that his reflux might have reared its ugly head?
If it is reflux, I prefer to not go back on an Rx meds, as I know we are hopefully quite close to the finish line (he’s been of Zantac since 4.5 months…was on it since 6 weeks). I remember reading about Cherry Flavored Maloxx on here a while back. What is the dosage for this? What are the side effects? Could it help?
I would so apreciate any suggestions.
I’m also jumping on some other postings to see if there is anywhere that I can help…it’s been a while, but maybe I can.
THANKS!

Inactivemaybe it could be one of the new solids that have been added (if any). but, i wanted to let you know shane has been doing that with the solids as well here and there now.. he NEVER used to do that. i think they are starting to prefere some over others or maybe they dont want to eat but want a bottle instead.. and they are trying to let us know
… thats my theory;) well i hope things get better, and it doesnt end up being his reflux ..

InactiveHi! I don’t have any bright ideas, but wanted to let you know that we’re going through the same thing right now. Sarah is 9 months old today and has been kind of weird the past 3 weeks or so. I thought it was a tooth at first, but nothing ever appeared. I thought it might have been her reflux, but that doesn’t appear to be it either. It’s NOTHING like the fussiness we went through before her reflux was under control, she just isn’t acting like herself 100% of the time. Maybe it IS a 9 month old thing??
Hopefully we can both find some answers soon!Amy

InactiveI was thinking that maybe it could be teething? I am not sure if that is even the case at all but i thought I would throw it out there. Whatever it is I hope it is shortlived!

InactiveTHANK YOU ALL!! I am SO hoping it’s a combo of being a newly fussy and independent 9 month old, and teething (he JUST got his bottom teeth about two weeks ago–perhaps the uppers are coming).
What a wonderful bunch you all are!!

InactiveA few things to note/ask…as well as another big question…
I tried peanut butter this morning (my Ped gave me the “ok”. We have no history of allergies in the family. He said just to stay away from honey). Anyway–he didn’t cry when eating that. So…maybe he has just decided he doesn’t like baby food.
Just in case, does anyone know the Maalox (sp?) or Mylanta dosing?
AND…have any of you ever had your child gag when given anything with texture? Sander will eat strained baby food and oatmeal ceral fine (well, minus this new crying), but he literally gags the moment any texture touches his tongue (I’ve tried the level 3 food w/ added mini-noodles–he completely gags). Is this common in babes who were once (or may still be) reflux? Is it common in general?
ANY advice/suggestions/”I’ve been there”s” would be SOOO appreciated!!
THANK YOU!!

InactiveWhen I first gave Sarah some finger foods (green beans, pears, cheerios, etc…) she gagged on them as well. I even put some small pieces of cheerios in her stage 2 food and she gagged big time! I was nervous that she would have texture issues but after 2 weeks now of regularly eating finger foods she’s doing great! She is making the “chewing” motion now instead of spitting it out or gagging. I am amazed at how fast she can wolf down food! So my guess would be that he is just getting used to the textures and will do fine shortly.
I don’t know the exact Mylanta dosing but I give 2-3ml as needed. I think you shouldn’t exceed so many ml per day but I’m not sure what the limit is. I am fairly positive that the only side effect of TOO much is diarrhea so keep an eye on that.
Good luck!

Amy

InactiveThanks so much! I will try the Mylanta…but it keep it low-dose and not often…and only if I really think he needs it.
I am grateful to hear your words on the texture thing. I’ll keep trying. He will eat the YoBaby yogurt that comes mixed with Oatmeal cereal…and it definitely has some chunks. So…perhaps we are on our way. If at first you don’t succeed…

THANK YOU!

InactiveI babysat a lot as a teen and worked as a nanny for many years after that. I can tell you that I only remember one out of the many babies that I cared for who would eat stage 3 baby food. They all went from purees to finger foods. I think that pureed stuff with chunks is confusing to them so they gag. None of these babies had reflux.
As for the new crying with purees, it could be that he’s asserting his independence and wants to self feed already. Maybe try giving him a spoon with a small bowl of something to feed himself and then you can sneak some bites in with your own spoon. My babies all loved purees for a long time, but I babysat plenty who wanted to move on to finger foods at a pretty young age. Also, I’ve had great success with Myles by giving him special toys at mealtimes to keep him happy and make mealtimes pleasant.
At that age I used to give Myles 2.5 mls of Mylanta Cherry Supreme.

InactiveThank you! I feel better already.

InactiveShane also gags with any chunks. he even gags when i make a lot of the baby food myself.. if there is any lumps he will gag! sooo, i am not sure if its reflux related or not but i am sure thats normal and he will get used to textured foods over time. yesterday i gave him some cooked egg yolk and i tried mixing it in with his baby food and he gagged and hated it! so than i thought to break it in pieces and let him experiment and i would feed him the pieces and he did fine! soo, i am not sure why but all i know is that around this age they get VERY particular 😉 and i think they are trying to voice their opinions.

InactiveIf I remember correctly, around nine months Brianna started hating baby food and went straight to table food.
I don’t remember any major gagging…that is unless I tried to give her stage three combo dinners. But the girl could eat anything if you cut it up for her (Chicken nuggets even, with only two teeth). I think at that age babies start to experss themselves more and let you know what they do and don’t want. And it doesn’t end from there. We were having a hard time getting Brianna to eat foods she once enjoyed. One day I just didn’t know what to do so I handed her the whole chicken nugget and I said, here, you do it. Well wouldn’t you know the stinker ate the whole thing. Just turned out she had seen her daddy and myself eat things without them being cut up, and now that she had more teeth, she wanted to be like the big people. You gotta love these silly babies.

Talk about silly babies, I’ve been trying for months to get Myles to eat cut up pieces of chicken. He flatly refuses. Well the other day I was in a hurry to get Liza to ballet and was feeding him while the girls ate. I got a twinge of hunger so I picked up a chicken breast and ate a piece while cutting up his food. Well, he started screeching for some and he ate four or five pieces like it was the best thing he ever ate! Why? Because I let him gnaw off chunks of it with his teeth instead of cutting it up.
Babies! They sure can have minds of their own.
